The Nureonago, coloquially known as the "wet woman," is a yōkai from Japanese folklore. They appear as young girls who are soaked from head to toe, often with dead leaves and other detritus stuck to their bodies. They are usually encountered on roads near rivers, coasts or swamps, but can also appear on nights of heavy rainfall.
If people try to help the dishevelled young women when they appear, the Nureonago will smile at them. If the smile is returned, the yōkai will follow the person for the rest of their life. Though she means no harm, she will cause the person's home to become wet, and they will be plagued by the smell of damp forevermore. If the smile is not returned, she will disappear.
