Drug moralising is killing people
Here in Australia the most common codeine preparation is called “Nurofen Plus”, which is a mixture of 12.8 mg codeine with 200 mg ibuprofen. It is also possible to get a preparation of codeine and paracetamol in much the same proportions. Currently both medications are available at the pharmacy -- they’re not quite over the counter but almost, you have to ask for them, and you are limited to one box of 24 at a time.
The only problem with this is that people keep getting addicted to them and dying of kidney failure (in the case of ibuprofen) or liver failure (in the case of paracetamol), so they are talking about making it prescription only.
The ironic thing about all of this is it’s not the codeine that is killing people, it’s the other crap they mix it with. The original Nurofen Plus tablet came with the codeine on one side and the Ibuprofen on the other, so you could easily split off the codeine (if that’s all you wanted). However, once they figured out that people were just taking the codeine half they decided to make it more difficult by mixing everything together. This was supposed to prevent abuse. Because you know, we can’t have people abusing medications.
Instead, a lot of people simply didn’t realise how toxic it was to take large amounts of ibuprofen or paracetamol over a long period and eventually ended up dying via screwing up their internal organs. Often these people weren’t typical “drug users” (what ever that is), and lacked access to information. Interestingly, it’s pretty difficult to overdose from codeine alone, the reported LD50 is 800mgs, but this was extrapolated from experiments on rodents, and anecdotal reports suggest the real LD50 may be much higher, even in opiate naïve subjects.
I suppose I just find incredibly fucked up that it’s the shit they add to prevent abuse that kills people, not the drug itself.
