Nurturing Creativity in an Academic World
When our oldest was young we were good at staying focused on her creative, imaginative spirit. We were often busy trying to figure out how to fly like a fairy and why our brooms don’t fly like a witch, or playing hide and seek, telling stories, and exploring paint, scissors and glue. We rarely focused on academic things like writing letters and reading sight words. We figured she had lifetime of grades and tests in front of her.
Then she went to school and picked up those academic skills - fast. She loves to read, loves math and science. So now its summer, I remember how much I loved summer break as a kid. But here I sit, worried about the dreaded “summer slide”. Will she be ready for second grade? Will she remember how to read a clock, understand fractions, etc… I miss our old perspective. So we are taking sometime tonight to reflect on this and to remember that we want to nurture and grow her imagination, creativity and sense of self.
Deep breath, smile, time for play!
