rewatching merlin is like: here's the softest most joyful person you've met. watch as the universe slowly breaks him down and forces him to lose all of his happiness, but still smile away softly so his best friend doesn't know...

I love the Merlin fandom because what do you mean that you’re still here after 12 years??? And you’re still just as sad, just as creative, and just as thoughtful! We’re just like Merlin… waiting and remembering…
uther: valiant is what a knight should be, noble birth, vicious and never backing down from a fight
arthur: lancelot is what a knight should be, honorable and kind, courageous
and this was 5 episodes in!
literally, every fiber of Arthur’s being is woven with love for Camelot and its ordinary but good people.
hey tumblr. is anyone still actively posting about BBC merlin (and merthur by extension) in 2025?
could you like/reblog this post? I really need some mutuals who are still here <3
When Arthur comes back (because how could he not), he’s so excited to see the world and all the new technological advances. But he often confuses Merlin’s magic with 21st century inventions.
He will point to things in the street, when they’re walking and ask, “Magic or not?”
“The billboards aren’t magic,” Merlin will reply.
“What about this bread warming tool?”
“Not magic.”
“Could you warm bread this way with magic?” Arthur will ask.
When Merlin replies that he can, Arthur will sigh with annoyance and say, “And yet! You brought me cold soggy bread rolls all the time!”
So, they when Arthur asks “magic or not” again, Merlin will tell him all the wonderful things magic can do and it heals something inside him each time.
Do we think merlin has perfect memory? I’ve always wondered if with time, he starts to forget the little things.
First, he forgets the songs they’d play at feasts in Camelot, each one fading into melodies that all sound the same.
Next, he forgets the taste of the porridge Gaius fed him every morning. The grain becomes much finer, and there’s something missing even when he tries to recreate it.
Then, slowly, the bigger things start vanishing. He starts to forget what Gwen’s favorite flower was. Was it lilacs or lilies? What about the sound of her voice? Her laughter? It all begins to become fragile, vanishing from his mind slowly.
He writes down what he can remember, of course. Searches for magical ways to perfect his memories m. No spells exist that can turn back time and make him remember it all, though.
All his power and yet, time takes and takes from him. The strangest day is when he begins to forget the exact shade of Arthur’s hair: was it golden like sunflowers, bright yellow, or muted like honey? Did it feel as soft as silk or was it like cotton thread?
The memories fade and he waits, waits until he can know it all again. After all, when Arthur comes back, Merlin can ask him all that he’s forgotten.
I think the most beautiful thing about Merlin and Arthur romantically was how they never wanted to possess the other. The unspoken devotion between them was never given a name but it wasn’t less beautiful than being married or anything.
They loved each other the way you love sunlight on a cold day. You don’t have to possess it to appreciate its warmth…
me, since 2009, whenever I see a blond-brunette couple: this is just like merthur
