BLOG 4: The Nutcracker
The "Waltz of the Flowers" is a piece of orchestral music from the second act of The Nutcracker. Like Handel's Messiah, this work has long enjoyed its place of holiday tradition throughout the western world. The Nutcracker was based on a translation of a Hoffmann Tale which a little girl comes to the aid of her Christmas gift (a magic Nutcracker in the costume of a soldier) in his battle against an army of mice. The "waltz of flowers" occurs late in the second act and serves as the final movement Tchaikovsky extracted for concert performance.
