[M/V] Nuttyverse(너티벌스) - Sienna
New Releases - Top 5 Picks (3 Oct. - 9 Oct. 2016)
1)Lugoh - With You (feat. Olltii and Xitsuh)
This mellow track from Lugoh is perfect to wind down to, with its smooth R&B feel. The song features rising stars Olltii and Xitsuh of Show Me the Money, who are Lugoh’s labelmates at C9 Entertainment. A solid track with a trendy but ultimately soothing vibe.
2)Holiday - Into My World
A little different from the other releases, Holiday’s sophomore single album ‘Into My World’ is an eclectic mix of country rock underpinned by a dark bluesy tone. Holiday’s soulful voice has a unique color, and the Kim Park Chella-produced single album has a distinct and innovative sound. Definitely one to watch out for!
3) Garion - 그니까 (Because of That)
A fun and high-energy track from pioneers of the hip-hop underground, Garion. MC Meta and Naachal work together to deliver a catchy track with an old-school feel. Featuring artist Son Seungyeon delivers a tight and dynamic verse, rounding the song off nicely. Give this a listen if you’re a fan of classic hip-hop with a fresh twist.
4)JERO x Dok2 - Paradise
Another relaxing track, this time from JERO and Dok2. JERO’s strong and warm vocals are an impressive point of this low tempo love song and provide a nice contrast to Dok2’s sharp rap. The perfect track for contemplative fall evenings.
5)Nuttyverse - 연애 안할래 (We Won’t Date) with 헤빈 (Hyebin)
The title track of part one of Nuttyverse’s album “Mon Monde” fits the theme of mellow autumn songs, with an upbeat, jazz-infused style of hip-hop. A fun and easy listen, it’s nicely complemented by singer Hyebin’s featuring vocals. You can read more about the rapper’s vision for the album in our interview with him here.

For rapper Nuttyverse, his upcoming first album is a chance to show the world that he is versatile. That he can do more than one style of hip-hop.
The album, called “나의 세계 (My World),” is broken up into two parts of six songs each, with the first to be released this month. However, both parts feature very different styles and tones, the 26-year-old rapper said.
“Overall I like to show that I can do all different kinds of music. I can take a different range of music. So, even though it’s separated into part one and part two, I want to show the audience, hey, I’m not really tied to a specific sound,” he said in an interview with DKU at Noise Museum by Trenta in Apgujeong. “And that’s what I’m trying to convey in music.”
Part one will feature a mellow, jazzy sound, he said, with part two to be more upbeat and carry a harder sound. He said it took him about six months to complete part one, though most of that time was spent on selecting the right beat.
Writing comes fast and easy, Nuttyverse admitted, it’s finding the right music that can be tricky. It only took about two months to write all the lyrics for the six tracks in part one for “My World,” but four to meet with beatmakers and producers to find the right music.
“I tend to find an overall theme first and then try to find the right beat that suits the theme or the title. So I usually request songs from producers who will be able to produce a track that is suitable to the theme,” he said, adding that for part one, he sought out producers who specialized in jazz hip-hop.
Alongside each part, Nuttyverse will also release a music video. Part one’s video, for a track called “꽐라(Wasted),” will be released this month as well. He said the song is essentially what it appears – a track about getting drunk and having fun.
“There’s going to be a lot of stupidity in there,” he said while grinning, referring to the music video.
Nuttyverse started hip-hop during his second year of high school. At the time he had initially wanted to be a singer in an indie band, however a fateful encounter with Dynamic Duo’s first album quickly changed his mind. From then on, he decided he would be a rapper.
Except for the two years he was in military service, he’s been doing music for seven years now and has released four mixtapes, one mini album and five singles.
“Unlike other genres, in hip-hop we can talk about everything. Any subject. I found it to be attractive,” he said, smiling slightly. The soft-spoken rapper continued that doing hip-hop has given him confidence, which he views as one of his biggest accomplishments so far, even more than the competitions he’s won. He was shy growing up, and hip-hop changed that.
Even still, he faces many of the same struggles as other underground and independent artists, the biggest of which being money and funding. He said he had saved up a fair amount through part-times jobs, however with his full-length album nearing completion – he has three tracks left to finish on part two – most of that is gone.
He also called the lack of feedback at times disappointing. “You release something and then you don’t get any feedback,” he said with a shrug.
However, Nuttyverse doesn’t seem to let it get to him for long. While he is currently busy finishing up “My World” and preparing for the release of part one and it’s corresponding music video, he hopes for good things in the future.
He laughingly admitted that he’d someday like to have his friends’ friends ask him for his autograph. Or maybe collaborate with Kendrick Lamar, Dean or Zion.T. He said that he hopes working with the two Korean singers could create something new.
“Because their music is pretty trendy, I think something new will be generated since I’m viewed as classic hip-hop. Working with these two, we could make something new,” he said, smiling.
Outside that, he said he wants to put together a performance video with a live band as well.
He said that he hopes a lot of people will listen to the album once it’s released, even though it may be difficult for international fans to understand or relate to. He was inspired by his life and experiences in putting it together – the reality of himself.
“Basically, everything I see in my everyday life,” he said.
While he believes that there has not been much of a change in Korean hip-hop as of late, he does feel as though it’s shifting more into the mainstream. “Compare to before, there’s a lot of young people that are involved and it’s heading in a cool direction,” he said.
Part 1 of “My World” will drop this month and Nuttyverse is planning to hold showcases in Busan and Daegu. To keep up with more information on Nuttyverse, follow him on Facebook or Twitter and check out his SoundCloud.
