It was just another piece of junk that fell out of an old ratty book as I cleaned out the trunk in my grandfather's attic, or so I thought. When I finally got around to picking it up I saw that it had faint writing on it - "All my love, Fernando - 1923". I turned it over and saw the faded image of a strikingly handsome man. He appeared to be some sort of circus performer but the outfit he was wearing seemed borderline scandalous for 1923. It seemed like an outdoor shot so maybe it was just a casual practice session. I wondered what his story was as I stared at his amazing physique and why my grandfather had such a revealing photo of him with such an intimate inscription. Then I remembered the old stories about the time he had run off to join the circus. I had always thought it was just a joke or an embellishment of a much more tame adventure but maybe there was something to it after all. I looked at the photo again and imagined what it would have been like to know a man like that back in the day. Maybe those other whispered stories about my grandfather's preferences had a grain of truth to them as well. I smiled as I thought about the two of them sneaking off together for covert trysts in some darkened corner of the circus tent. I carefully tucked the image of Fernando into my pocket. He was definitely a keeper!
