"nous avons... vous avez... ils ont... elles ont..." Madame Morell's voice had been nothing but a background noise to Erica for the last few days. She decided to take French class for easy credits, she was already fluent in Spanish. However she had been seated behind a boy that she had seen once or twice, one that piqued both her interest and her concern. His quiet nature didn't worry her at first, she would be a hypocrite if that was the case. Both of them were extremely shy and withdrawn, but four days ago Erica noticed that he had yet another black eye. The year had started two weeks ago, and she had already seen his other eye bruised. And today Isaac walked with a limp, a visible wince taking over his face whenever he shifted even the slightest. Madame Morell never called on him in class, so why was he so anxious all the time? She'd read enough books to see the signs. Not to mention she'd had her own experience with abuse. Although hers was only for one day, it still scarred her both emotionally and physically. She knew that someone ought to ask him about it, and if he was safe. She hadn't slept much ever since she grew suspicious, and this was the final straw. When the bell rang she deliberately took a long time to gather up her books and her homework, waiting for him to head to his locker so she could follow. Her heart was pounding in her throat as she clutched the small piece of paper she had written her speech on. She never talked to anyone... ever. Especially a boy. Hopefully she wouldn't vomit. The blonde waited for him to open his locker before tapping him on the shoulder, willing herself to look him in the eyes as she spoke. "Hi! My name's... well, it doesn't really matter. I'm in your French class? And I sit behind you... and frankly, I'm a little worried. From what I've seen -- not that I like, watch you or anything... you've had two black eyes and a bum leg in the span of two weeks. I guess, what I'm wondering-- asking-- is... is everything okay? Y'know... at home?" The speech in her hand had been abandoned, leaning forward and lowering her voice just in case. "Are you... safe?"
