So one of the absolute coolest things we got to do during Northwest Fan Fest was getting to see this exhibit in the art gallery that was inside the convention centre. This exhibit included Martin Creed's piece, Work No. 202. The idea behind the piece is to have half the air in a given space be contained in balloons. So basically, we got to walk through a room of solid black balloons while in cosplay. At first we were all really scared and reluctant to do it, but it turned out to be suuuuper awesome!
Welp, not seeing many artists post up their reviews of the con yet. I have a feeling why. Sooo here I bravely take a step forward and offer my own review of my experience selling in artist alley.
I’m just going to be candid with my thoughts. POINT FORM. Pros and cons. Bam!
Pros:
NICE WEATHER. It was beautiful. Warm. Epic. I love no coat weather.
CLOSE VENUE. OMG. That was amazing. Being driving distance to the con was epic sauce. Winding down in my own house, sleeping in my own bed at night = less dead Neo.
Venue close to Timmies/Starbucks/sushi/fooooooods. So important. So good. I ate sushi nearly every day, life sustaining. Awesome.
AIR CONDITIONING GIANT ARTIST ALLEY ROOM. YES. WE COULD BREATHE. GIANT COSPLAYERS COULD MOVE AROUND FREELY. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.
Brought package of assorted mini chippies. So smart, ya guys. Quick snack, minimal mess. BRILLIANT.
FRIENDLY. Everyone at the con, really. Staff included.
Cosplayers were friendly to talk to and always eager to let us take pictures. Sooo many awesome cosplays. There was a gorgeous Orianna cosplay walking around. Everyone kept pointing to my Orianna & Blitz poster and saying OH HEY SOMEONE WAS DOING AN EPIC COSPLAY OF THAT. XD It was neat.
Friendly fellow artists & vendors. It was nice to walk around and talk to fellow sellers. They were honest and friendly, and as recovering shy person I appreciate that c:
I BOUGHT SO MUCH SWAG. A blue plush cat. A vendor cut me a deal for some epic posts, I think I bought 4 or 5. A “I can’t Eeveen” shirt. Pat&Matt buttons. SO MUCH EPIC SWAG!
BEST TABLE HELP EVER. Squid you are the best ever ♥ Your coffee & sushi runs gave me life!
Cons:
While the artist alley room was HUGE, it was also unfinished. The walls and floor were bare concrete. The staff told me that when they looked at the place to reserve it for the con, the people there at the venue said it would be all finished. Aaand clearly it wasn’t when the con came.
THE CAVE aka THE DUNGEON. So aptly named by us artists. The furthest part of the room was a cave like area. It was not well lit at all. The staff had to get big work lights to light up the area. My table was in the cave XD
Artists alley was segregated from main area. People had to go outside the building to our door inside artists alley. Not too bad a con, since most people hung out right outside to chat and take pictures of cosplayers. I also heard from staff there was suppose to be a door leading from the inside of the con into the room, but that too wasn’t finished. So we had a no where door; presumably locked.
Blank badges. WUT. C’moooon. We all like our names printed out nicely on our badges. We don’t want to scribble it out in markerrr. XD Printed badges make us feel professional.
Time changes. While I can understand why extending the time of artist alley by an hour or so should help- it didn’t. No one in the con would know because that’s not the time printed in the schedule. There was no official announcement anywhere. It was rather unprofessional.
First day was ass. No one sold well. It was pretty quiet all around. Second day was what day one should have been. Third day was worst than the second day but better than the first.
NWFF last year was all the local cons under one big collective name: NorthWest Fan fest, which was far more successful. This year it appears to be branching off into its own independent convention, which had a very poor turn out. All in all, I think NWFF was awesome for those attending for fun, but lousy for those selling.
That said, I don’t think I’ll be attending next year.
Met some awesome people at NWFF! And had lots of fun with the ones I went with. Had a hard time trying to be serious with them around for most of our picture attempts, so these happened. Guess that’s what happens when you have a Nora without a Ren!
