But yeah so the nwsl draft!

Players that are eligible (so ncaa players aka ya college players that have either completed their senior season or forfeited the rest of their time) can enter themselves for the nwsl draft & then the NWSL holds “the draft” where there is a predetermined order for who gets to go first.

Note: if a player doesn’t register then they’re not eligible to play in the nwsl until the season has ended & they become eligible after the upcoming season has ended, at which point they become a “discovery player”. If they are not picked but they were registered they become a “discovery player” right away.

The order is decided by the standings from the year before (whoever was in last place picks first in the following year, whoever wears in first place picks last, & it continues in that same order for each round) & then from there things change up depending on what what picks have been traded. Teams can trade by “round” for different things, so someone could trade their “first round pick” (aka the pick they get in the first round, even tho they don’t know for sure which number it will be)

For example, (this is assuming there isn’t an expansion team) if ncc ends the season in 1st place, then they’ll automatically have the 9th (& last) pick in every round. If Orlando finishes last, they’ll get the 1st pick in every round.

From here, they could make a trade with each other. Say ncc really wants the first pick for whatever reason, they could trade, say, Jess*ca McDonald for Orlando’s first round pick, and then ncc would have the 1st pick in the first round, the 9th pick in the first round, &the 18th pick overall (9th in the second round); while Orlando would have the 10th pick overall (1st in second round) & JMac.

Or say Orlando was waiting out for the next yr for whatever reason (maybe it looks like it’ll be a stronger yr overall or it seems like it’ll be defense heavy & they need more defense or whatevs), they could trade their first & second round picks for this year in exchange for ncc’s first round pick next year or something along those lines.

Usually trades aren’t that easy & straightforward lol but those are just examples to try & help you understand the process

There are also trades that have been made in the past that will affect who has what picks for this upcoming year. Idk any of those off the top of my head but we’ll get some articles detailing stuff like that as well as an Official Draft Order once the season ends & we close in on the draft date.

You can look here to see what happened with all the picks in the 2019 draft and at the bottom it explains what happened to cause the picks to be in that order, to help you understand how it works a little better! & once we get some articles abt the 2020 draft I’m sure I’ll post them writhed here or at least on my main (beckysaucrbrunn) plus I’m sure the links will be plastered all over lol.

So essentially: a series of factors goes into the order of teams for the draft. The teams and most of the players who entered for the draft then meet wherever the draft is held (I think it changes from year to year?) and each team makes their picks in order & it’s usually live-streamed through the nwsl website. This (generally speaking, there are exceptions of course) is how college players get onto nwsl teams.

Sometimes there’s special cases with players that are allocated (us soccer pays their salary instead of their nwsl club, a new list is released each year) & they have their own draft & essentially the next allocated player goes to the next club on the list which, if i remember correctly? Is how M@llory Pugh got sent to the spirit
