{ dust hymn; toby & suran
Relief slides immediately along the surface of Suran’s skin each day the sun begins to rest. It’s just one of the many reactions her body has to the environment that she can’t explain nor really tries to. Her internal temperature always drops drastically as the sky’s golden warmth retires for the same reason the muscles that wrapped her bones ached with desperation to conquer nature’s soothing liquid the moment she approaches any water. It’s in her biological makeup to work this way and she’s never questioned it otherwise.
It wasn’t just the setting sun that caused an invisible weight to lift from Suran’s tired bones. She had spent the entire day testing herself with one of the Nexus Institute’s traditional games and while it was something she looked forward to each year, it wasn’t just her powers and abilities that had been tested this time. The unexpected emotional run-ins proved to be more exhausting than anything else she had encountered, and she was just ready for it to be over.
With her boots in one hand (laces dancing wildly to the rhythm of the wind) and half a bottle of water from her pack in the other, Suran walked along the sandy path towards the coral blanket glowing above the nearing body of water. She had gathered all the sashes she was willing to take this year and defended her own more than triple that amount. Submerging herself beneath the welcoming waves would be her reward for the day.
Her skin was still lightly dusted with frost after spending hours with her power’s senses at an all-time high. It was already drastically fading from the way it appeared just a couple of hours before, but parts of it still remained sprinkled along her skin like powdery snow, the translucency showing in random places. She had never had this side-effect on her body before but like anything that had to do with her cryokinesis, Suran accepted it just as it was – natural. As long as she wasn’t in immediate danger (and with the sun finally setting and the water rehydrating her body, she knew she wouldn’t be), then she didn’t stop to worry too often about whatever was happening.
Suran was growing in both physical and mental strength, so it only made sense that her power was, too.
Bare feet padding lightly against the soft, loose substance on the beach surface, Suran nearly found herself in a skip as she approached. She was just moments away from throwing down her things and stripping off her clothes so she could run into the water (the need to solidify the liquid around her body made her skin buzz with delight). But just before she could indulge in this moment, she caught the sight of a young man from the corner of her eye that put her steps to a complete halt.
Slightly tilting her head, she stood in silence (breathing so slow, she could barely hear it herself) just so she could observe him. It didn’t take long before she could recognize who it was, even from the back. No one else but Toby would be sitting there with an unnatural whirl of sand, playing along the direction of whatever it was he was doing with his hand. Suran could barely make out the shapes from where she stood, but she knew it’s just what he was doing.
Suran held nothing personal against Toby (and actually quite liked the conversations the two of them had begun having together), but at the end of the day he was still another student, and she had worked too hard to collect and protect the ribbons she had just to take the chance someone else would take them.
She knew if she wanted to enjoy the beach in the way she intended, she’d first have to null any possible threats (Toby included).
Suran had no plans of rushing at him with anything forceful (especially before she didn’t know his intentions) and his distraction with the sand helped her form a much easier scheme than the ones she’d been faced with earlier in the day.
Staying nearly soundless as she placed her items on the sandy floor, Suran crouched down low to the ground and used her left hand to extract the solidifying water from the bottle she had just been drinking out of. The small body of content made it easy to ice quickly, and as she pulled it through the open mouth (eyes never once removing focus from the back of Toby’s body), her fingers lightly stretched and pulled in circular motions around the ice, manipulating (and thankful for) the thickness of the humidity in the air so she could add to and create the density and shape she needed.
It took less than half a minute before she had the ice stretching around both of his wrists, the force of the power in the frozen water pulling the both of them together so they melded in place securely behind his back. It all happened so fast – binding his hands, rushing to the other side of him, her own fingers locking in the air to keep metaphysical hold on the element keeping his arms together. She had only enough time to briefly check his surroundings (mentally noting she didn’t see any ribbons, but not convinced they weren’t there), before her eyes locked on his and she allowed a playful smile to spring across her lips.
“Hi, Toby.” Her voice was innocent, but her stance said otherwise (the rank A cryokinetic always on the defense). “Did you have fun playing the Ribbon Games today?”
