                                           The bus is busy enough that Connor has reason — or at least a valid attempt at an excuse — to keep the distance between them narrowed to a bare minimum. Elio’s back feels warm and solid against his chest, the static whisper of their clothing lost to the droning chatter of the surrounding crowd. Connor reaches over the human’s shoulder to grip the metal handrail, and that’s when he feels it; the skip of Elio’s pulse, strong enough that Connor can feel it even through a barrier of skin and blood and bone.

Concerned, Connor’s brow creases in a faint frown. There’s no need for Elio to panic — Connor had scanned the bus for potential dangers before they boarded, assessing the threat level to be low enough for them to risk the public travel. There’s no need for Elio to experience anxiety, but why else would his heart be leaping so quickly?

Leaning close enough for his voice to be heard without needing to raise it, Connor presses the fingers of his free hand against Elio’s neck. His pulse jumps beneath Connor’s synthetic skin, apparently picking up speed at the simple touch.

“Your heart is racing,” Connor points out, and if his fingers press a little harder, he could only attribute it to the gentle sway of the bus beneath their feet. “Are you alright?”
