Weekend gateway from NY to Woodstock!
Stopped in Nyack for lunch. Veg burger with homemade buns was flavorful, fresh and delicious! Maple grazed donut for dessert : ))
#50Years Ago This Week: TWO LOCAL PILOTS WIN – Snoopy Tops 'Red Baron' in Nyack Power Regatta Excerpt from the Journal-News, Week of August 12-18, 1968 Photos by Andy Dickerman Several thousand persons watched two local drivers pilot their high-speed powerboats to victory yesterday over 24 others in the fourth annual Nyack Regatta. Seventeen-year-old John Powell of Nyack won the E-class in a 13-foot modified ReeseCraft especially designed for Hudson River use by Reese DeLorenzo of Congers. DeLorenzo, chairman of the race and president of the Hudson River Racing Association, co-sponsored it along with the F. and M. Schaeffer Brewing Co. Benson O'Connor of New City, Powell's mechanic, was the winner in the larger J-class. To win this class, O'Connor had to beat last year's U.S. national racing champion, Tom Strickle, who traveled from Dayton, Ohio to compete. The champion won more races than any other driver last year but couldn't survive yesterday's choppy waters. He finally yielded to O'Connor, who is only in his first year of racing. O'Connor had some bad moments near the end when the rough ride caused a heavy steel drum, used as a fuel tank, to come loose and began rolling around. He spent the rest of the race dividing his attention between steering and looking back to make sure the barrel didn't roll forward into him. A skillful Connecticut driver managed to save his boat from sinking after the bottom was partially ripped out. Shocked spectators saw him continue at full speed to keep the boat raised up out of the water and run up the memorial park launching ramp. The most interesting contest was Powell's win; this is his first year of organized racing. He edged out Marty O'Neil, who won this class last year. O'Neil suffered the first defeat in his racing career. The O'Neil boat named "Red Baron," was beaten by "Snoopy," the name of Powell's boat. No serious accidents occurred during the American Power Boat Association sanctioned race, although half the entrants weren't able to finish. Winners of each class were decided by the greatest number of laps of the five-mile course that could be completed in the races two-hour duration. _____ The HSRC is pleased to be compiling “This Week in Rockland” a weekly feature appearing in the Rockland Review.
