when i was at my loneliest, i would go down to broadway and offer to hold the camera for tourist families so they could all be in the shot together. i would just wander around doing that. it was an excuse to exchange words with somebody. to be acknowledged by anybody. and they're always so happy to be here, it was a reminder that i should be happy to be here too. i still offer, every time, if i happen to come across a group split between photographer and photographed. my favorite memory is when i'd misunderstood a large group of tourists, and got their tour guide, or perhaps even professional photographer, to stand with them while i took the photo, much to the delight and humor of that group
