Discovering New York's Hidden Theatre Gems
You've already heard of the well-established (and expensive) shows that have made Broadway famous, but there are hundreds of opportunities to see amazing theater of a high quality outside of the more obvious choices on Broadway. New Yorkers know that the Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway scenes feature exciting and edgy plays by new talent, and provide economical and fresh entertainment for a visitor to the city. You may even get the chance to catch the next broadway breakout hit before the New Yorkers see it!
One of the standout productions from the off-off-broadway scene paving a path towards its Broadway debut is Jump Man: A Mario Musical. This hilarious comedy tells the story of what happened to the Italian-american plumbers (from the video games) and their cohorts after their adventuring days are over. Mario and Luigi have put down their Tanuki suits and fire-flowers, resuming a life of normalcy—they now run an average plumbing shop in Brooklyn (well, average, except for the giant green pipe and mushroom-headed assistant). When people in the neighborhood start mysteriously disappearing, the colorful characters in this full-length musical play are forced to face the past, asking questions like "what makes a hero?" and "can plumbers sing?" Jump Man recently won the high honor of "Most Excellent Musical" for its world-premier run at the New York City Fringe Festival.
You can catch Jump Man, along with other productions, in September at the historic SOHO Playhouse in one of NYC's most exciting neighborhoods.
