Black Lives Matter is one of the largest uprisings in US history, and Black leftist organizers and Black working-class people are leading it. They are who we should be listening to right now. When we watch scenes of unchecked racism, state power, and toxic masculinity and white feminism that permeates bike culture and police culture, we have a choice: to allow them to speak for us or to hit the streets and campaign as part of a movement against white supremacy and police repression.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While many folks go on bike holidays during a pandemic, know that it is a privilege to ignore everything happening right now. This is what class struggle in the 21st century looks like. To deny this and reduce the protests to an “identitarian” impulse is self-defeating to any serious left project for systemic change. Black poor and working-class people experience entertwined capitalism and white supremacy daily: Police violence, targeted mass incarceration, and social and economic abandonment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The failure to confront white supremacy as a defining feature of US capitalism has consequences. It also has consequences in cycling culture. I am determined to have an “optimism of the will.” Pessimism be damned but please don't stop demanding change, please don't stop challenging folks and companies to do better, please don't stop talking to your family, co workers and friends, please don't stop being pro-Black, please don't stop listening to Black radical thought but please stop upholding white supremacist capitalist patriarchy. Liberation is for ALL of us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Repost from @snack_bikes / Justice Ride 5 on the 4th of July. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #nojusticenopeace #blacklivesmatter #streetridersnyc #nojusticenopeace #liberation #nycprotests #freedomisnow #unitedwestand #stopracism #racistpolice #bicyclists #protest #justice #occupycityhall #sayhername #breonnataylor #thisiswhatcommunitylookslike #ourstreets https://www.instagram.com/p/CDKOqswBKHf/?utm_medium=tumblr
I wanted to step up my photo game this year but Rona came through and exacerbated my depression. But at least I can say that I'm happy with this picture. Here, outdoor diners look on as protesters from the Queer March make their way through Greenwich Village in Manhattan. It's the best picture I've taken all year. #blacklivesmatter #fucktrump #ftp #nycprotests #spotnews #reportage #queermarch #blacktranslivesmatter #blacklgtbqialivesmatter #2020yearinpictures https://www.instagram.com/p/CJcPAhYH0sW/?igshid=tc5ie0zhf2sa
In a year when I took far fewer pictures than I would've liked, here is one of my favorites. Here, a BLM protester confronts police during a protest that took place on Trump's birthday, between his properties on Fifth Avenue and Columbus Circle. #blacklivesmatter #fucktrump #ftp #nycprotests #spotnews #reportage #2020yearinpictures https://www.instagram.com/p/CJcOQ1pHbSx/?igshid=16eyu7qpmizib
America you failed the test. your outrage didn’t register & law enforcement is now emboldened by your lack of concern. NYPD is taking cues from the Feds in Portland - Nikki, an 18-year-old transgender homeless woman (known in the movement as Stickers), was violently pulled into an unmarked van in NYC #AbolitionPark while peacefully protesting at the @AbolitionPark led protest as it approached 2nd Ave and 25th Street. if you can wrap your head around this, she was given a Desk Appearance Ticket (DAT) for putting stickers on police cameras during #OccupyCityHall. July 2020 where a misdemeanor offense can get you tackled to the ground in broad daylight & thrown into an unmarked vehicle resembling a kidnapping. #WhereIsNikki #NYCProtests #PoliceBrutality #ExcessiveForce #DefundThePolice #DefundTheNYPD (at Lower East Side Manhattan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDNiYc-B8VI/?igshid=11753gofrl4eq
