hey you know what makes me afraid for the future? the fact that most people who become police officers from now on definitely saw all the bullshit that we tried to call out and put a stop to and they’ll still become a police officer. They’ll see the discrimination and the brutality and they’ll go ‘i’m fine with that’ and they’ll become a cop. There’s no way you go into this blind. We’re all on the internet and that’s made it impossible not to hear the rally cries. I want to believe many police officers who just wanted to serve the public and protect people. The job may be shit but I’d like to believe the people are good. Still, I can’t imagine anyone from this generation going into it for any of the right reasons. They heard us scream for justice and scream for our lives and they will be happy to ignore us.

I had to call 911 while I was at work (I’m a hotel concierge) and the woman who I’m calling to have removed is standing across from me screaming at me while I try and speak to the operator. By the time the police arrive (45+ mins later) I’ve managed to get the woman to leave (after she spent 30+ mins screaming at me and harassing guest) and after I told the cop he goes “cool, it all worked out!” I spent almost an hour shaking and had to lock the doors early.

I’ve had to call cops to come “deescalate ” situations several times and they have NEVER helped the situation, not once.

Once or twice a month a cruiser will come sit in the parking lot for about 5 hours and give ticket after ticket all day.

Defund police because they aren’t providing a useful service, defund police because they don’t arrive quick enough to actually do something and when they do they make the situation worse, defund police because they only put effort in their job is when they need to meet a quota, defund police because when I comes to MY SAFTEY it will ALWAYS be in MY HANDS!

Defund the police because when your calling as a person of colour you shouldn’t have to hope you get a “good cop” defund the police because I will NEVER call them when I’m having an issue with a black man because whatever he’s doing won’t be worth his death.

The Issue As a member of the Bob Jones University community, I have experienced firsthand the inefficiencies and gross misconduct of the Public Safety department. Too often, I have found myself, along with my peers, on the receiving end of questionable decisions made by this department. Our experiences are not isolated, and we believe it's time to address this issue. Annual reports reveal a disturbing trend: there's an unnecessary overspending on public safety at our university. In fact, the budget for Public Safety at Bob Jones University has continued to increase at an alarming rate, much faster than the rate of inflation or student population growth. This disproportionate allocation of resources is neither justified nor sustainable. We urge the university administration to reevaluate this excessive funding. The funds could be better used to enhance our academic experience, improve student facilities, or increase financial aid. It's crucial that the institution we trust allocally our tuition and taxpayer money responsibly. We have the opportunity to create a safer, more fair, and more financially responsible community. By signing this petition, we ask Bob Jones University to reassess the budget allocation, improve oversight, and enhance the accountability of the Public Safety department. The Effect of the 2020 Black Lives Matter Protests on Police Budgets: How “Defund the Police” Sparked Political Backlash

This article investigates whether a core political demand of the 2020 Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests was realized: “defund the police.” Original hand-compiled data containing budget information on 264 major cities in the United States and comprehensive protest data enable us to assess the effect of protests on changes in city police budgets. We find no evidence that BLM protests led to police defunding. In cities with large Republican vote shares, protest is associated with significant increases in police budgets. We demonstrate that electoral incentives cannot explain this policy backlash. Instead, we provide tentative evidence that backlash in Republican cities might stem from policymakers’ own conservatism and entrenched right-wing influences within city politics. The analysis offers novel evidence on the consequences of the largest protest movement in U.S. history and reveals the importance of backlash in explaining policy outcomes of social movements.
