New piece up @villagepsychic about Mies van der Rohe and the origins of granite plazas in North America. 🏙 Inspired by @bobbydekeyzer , @dickrizzo , and others who have graced Mies' architecture with traces of skateboarding. Pictured here- NYC's Seagram building and Toronto's TD Centre. 🔗 Link in Bio. #miesvanderrohe #modernarchitecture #nycskateboarding #torontoskateboarding (at Bauhaus) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTh1UqZp124/?utm_medium=tumblr
Follow up to the last post- another one at Sara D. Roosevelt Park , a year later, in 1999, by @brianwenning732 from @transworldskate 's "Feedback" 16mm 🎥 section. Second image is from an ad in the East Side Chamber News, 1932, illustrating Howe and Lescaze's European-style housing block proposal, which thankfully never materialized. Sara D. Roosevelt Park was built in its place. #brianwenning #chrystiestreet #nycarchitecture #internationalstyle #nycskateboarding #nychistory #howeandlescaze (at Chrystie Street) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPbbGVbloPi/?utm_medium=tumblr
Stoked to see this one. FDR Four Freedoms Park, designed in 1974 by Louis Kahn, completed in 2012. @johnshanahanz 360 flip by @mikeheikkila for @dc_skateboarding "I had this thought that a memorial should be a room and a garden... The garden is somehow a personal nature, a personal kind of control of nature, a gathering of nature. And the room was the beginning of architecture. I had this sense, you see, and the room wasn’t just architecture, but was an extension of self.” — Louis Kahn Drawings by Kahn, and sprinkled in some photos of the spot when I took a bike ride over there a couple summers ago. #louiskahn #nycarchitecture #nycskateboarding #skatespotsinplan (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CI1M6QOFTAd/?igshid=1vzuezg5u1ymg
Zuccotti (Liberty) Park and One Liberty Plaza, by SOM, 1972, and redesigned by Quennell Rothschild & Partners in 2008⠀ ⠀ The public plaza was built as a privately owned public space (POPS) in exchange for relaxed height restrictions for the 54 story tower, commissioned by United States Steel, that replaced the iconic Singer building and its neighbor, the City Investing building. At the time of its completion, it was one of the largest office buildings in New York. ⠀ ⠀ 1. The historic Singer building (left), and the US Steel building (right)⠀ 2. @connorchampion1 switch pinch pre-Covid 3. Graphic illustrating the 10 tallest intentionally demolished buildings in history, including the Singer and City Investing.⠀ 4. Elijah Cole @abd_eli_jah cruising in the shadow of the U.S. Steel building, from @hoppsskateboarding ‘s “Into the Sun” ☀️ promo from earlier this year. I love everything about this promo- the music, the edit (@mystaticlife), and the smooth city lines. 🌃 Spot: Zuccotti (Liberty) Park and One Liberty Plaza, by SOM, 1972, and redesigned by Quennell Rothschild & Partners in 2008, just 3 years before the spot became the focal point of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.
