Early in his campaign, I learned that Mayor Mamdani's mother is acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair ("Mississippi Masala," "Salaam Bombay!," "Queen of Katwe"), and heard him speak about how this fueled his deep connection to and appreciation for the arts.
As a Black arts advocate, I am glad that we have a mayor who is committed to making the arts accessible for all New Yorkers, affordable for artists to live here, and to supporting small, community-based arts & cultural institutions.

For the first time, the budget includes a Cultural Stability Fund to support struggling arts organizations. The initiative provides a $10 million annual pool through fiscal year 2029, serving as an emergency resource for cultural organizations and artists.
