you don’t make a lot of money on the docks of ketterdam. not as a loader, not as a sailor, not even as a gifted tidemaker. luckily, she trades not in coins, but in secrets. news of shipments — some legal, some less so — all make their way to her ears, and then to her royal sister’s, back in ravka. some of those ships are lost at sea. and if those disappearances happen to boost the ravkan economy, what of it? a country needs money and information, and she can supply both, although even her darling sister has to pay her price. they don’t call her the shark for nothing.

jewelry and bombs. gemstones and guns. she’s a contradiction, and she knows it. she carefully spins gold and silver to make earrings, so delicate and pristine that they look like spiderwebs, for ladies of the court. and then, once they’ve all gone to their fancy balls — no doubt to jeer at the peasants — she creeps back into her studio and begins working on her other projects. change is coming, and a revolutionary new queen requires revolutionary new weapons.
