NYU student outing to watch MARIKANA the musical at the South African State Theatre. While we are here as part of our #StudyAbroad program, Education and Social Reform in South Africa, we would not be New Yorkers if we didn't take in a show 🎭 #NYUGlobal #NYUSteinhart #nyuStudyAbroad #NYU #travel #travelista #wanderlust #BlackPhDWomen @nyusteinhardt @nyuglobalprograms (at Marikana State Theatre In Pretoria)

We woke up the following morning bright and early in hopes of beating the lines to Cristo Redentor, Christ the Redeemer. We headed to Corcovado to find out that none of the trains were running up the mountain. After befriending some guys from Tasmania, we were able to split a cab and avoid the technical issues that the train posed. The line to go to the top of the mountain was a mile long. Begrudgingly, we started walking toward the end of the line, preparing for a long wait, when a man stopped me; next thing we knew, we were instructed to cut the entire line and get into one of the vans. No complaints from me! By the time we reached the top, it was crowded but nothing unbearable. There was something remarkable about seeing Christ the Redeemer appear right before you. With arms stretched open, Christ looks over the city and the people of Rio de Janeiro. The views from atop Corcovado Mountain were truly astonishing as the sun shone down on Cristo from heaven above. After many a photo-op, we headed down the mountain, grabbed a quick lunch, and went straight to the beach. It was just too hot not to be in the water. As we neared sunset, we decided to go to Arpoador, a rocky peninsula situated between two of the world’s most famous beaches: Copacabana and Ipanema. We had been told that it’s the best viewing spot and we settled into witness the colorful sky fade into dusk…that is, until a raincloud decided to stop directly in front of the sun. So much for the beautiful sunset that I had anticipated.
I had planned on heading to bed early (since the following day was New Year’s Eve), however, we ended up bonding with some people at the hostel and they convinced me to join in their merriment. After being persuaded into a few rounds of “Roxanne,” (a new drinking game thanks to our new Irish friends) I finally passed out five hours later than planned. When in Rio…
Introductions
Hello there. My name is Chloe, I'm currently attending NYU studying a mixture of film and whatever else interests me.
Why are you writing a blog?
Well, apart from the fact that I love hearing the sound of my own voice, I have a lot of travel planned for 2014. I'm going to start off my year in Abu Dhabi then spend the first half of the year studying abroad with NYU in Argentina (and that's all before June!) The cliché thing to do when one goes abroad is to start a blog in order to keep everyone at home updated. It's a valid concept, but one I'm not quite sure I can keep up with. However, this will be the longest period of time I've spent outside the States, and I need someplace where it's okay to write down long paragraphs and post pretty pictures (mainly to keep me from writing dozens of emails).
Why are you going to Argentina?
I never imagined a reality where I didn't spend a semester abroad. I've been traveling my whole life and NYU's institutional policy is to send as many students globally as possible, so it was always just the plan. I guess I'm partly going to Argentina for the challenge. I've never been to South America (only ever got as far as Central America) and I speak barely any Spanish (shout-out to Rosetta Stone!). I wanted to go someplace where I would be a bit isolated, somewhere completely out of my element. Europe and Australia felt too feasible, and West Africa was too familiar. Shanghai didn't seem to work with my studies. Argentina felt just far enough.
How often will you be updating this blog?
I'm not going to give myself any deadlines, because I can see this quickly becoming a task if that was the case. If you really are interested in keeping up with my travels, I'd say check in around twice a month. I'll hopefully be updating more than that, but worst case scenario, every two weeks there should be something new for you to look at.
How are you going to survive four months without US Netflix?
I have no idea.
Back in New York
This semester has been an awesome adventure! I would've never imagine that studying away would encompass so much fun, excitement, new friendships, and overall attachment to Shanghai, China. The semester flew by, as I have written previously and I can proudly say that if given the chance to change anything in the past, I would not. Each and every smile and mistake is what makes my very memory of my study abroad experience. I am very happy that I chose to study abroad in Shanghai! Other than suffering from jet-lag and a bad sleeping schedule, I find myself having to adjust to life in New York again. It's an odd feeling, especially since I grew up in New York. But I believe Shanghai has definitely opened up my eyes to how big the world is and how much there is to experience in the global age we live in!
I was blessed!

Studying Abroad in Shanghai
Today is move-out day for the majority of NYU Shanghai study-abroad students. It is a weird feeling to see the apartments become empty after having resided in the apartments for around three and a half months. Time flew. I still remember the first day I moved in and the memories that I formed while I was here. The new friendships I made, the new things I learned and the new experiences I gained. Shanghai is a great city that is modernizing and growing. I look forward to visiting Shanghai in the future.
Remember that time...I got stuck in Hong Kong?
