Any mass shooting is a tragedy, undoubtedly. But seeing some of the headlines and comments from people overseas regarding the shooting at two mosques in Christchurch yesterday, I wanted to give people a sense of how significant this loss of life has been for New Zealand.

This graph shows mass shootings with the highest total death tolls in the world, by deaths per capita.

The shooting in New Zealand has claimed 49 lives (and hopefully no more but there are some people still in critical condition). That makes it the 8th deadliest mass shooting in the world, equal to the Pulse nightclub shooting.

But it’s the second deadliest shooting per capita, by a huge margin. New Zealand is small and everyone in the country likely knows someone in Christchurch, if not someone who lost their life.

This tragedy has hit extremely close to home for most New Zealanders, especially so those in the Muslim community, so while I know how cathartic humour can be in situations like this, please don’t make jokes comparing this to the size of other mass shootings or imply that it could have been worse.

Kia kaha everyone and please continue to send messages of love to people affected and, if you’re able, look for charities or help funds set up to support the families and community.
