Judges Workshop - Pre NZ Barista championship 2013
Well, I have just returned from the big smoke of Auckland from participating at the Judges workshop for the New Zealand barista championship for this year. I thought for those who were thinking about going, thinking of entering the competition, or just generally getting involved - that i would share my thoughts on the workshop and what <in my eyes> one would have gained by attending the day!
Having been run by Emma MW, (to quote a recent industry magazine in the states) - the Matriarch of NZ Coffee, you know the wealth of knowledge being brought to the table is vast! Others involved in the workshop featured experienced judges and industry characters, (Chris White - Altura Coffee Company and Stuart Hargie - Bell Tea & Coffee Co - to name a couple) as well as previous competitors as well!
Having judged and competed previously myself, I still managed to walk away with more tips and insight to help me in my journey.
Personally, had I have been a competitor attending it this year, i sure would have been enlightened, a little more as to what the judges are looking for as we walked through breaking down the score sheets, looking step by step at each line on the sheets, and what they mean. What does the terminology mean? how do we as judges evaluate the coffees served to us?
I think if you are competing, and missed any of the 3 workshops that were on offer, you missed a chance to see how the points are awarded, (aside from the obvious) and how you could turn a score from a 4 to a 5 or even a 6.. which I can tell you from personal experience, having come 2nd in the Wellington heats a number of years ago, every point makes a difference..... I lost by 2 points!
I wont go into too much - because, if you weren't there.. you missed out. However, we did get shown this video.. care of the guys over at www.sprudge.com
Quite an informative video on how the competitor uses their 15 minutes of competition time, with some entertaining tidbits throughout. Enjoy

VIDEO: Coffee Catcha - Testimonials from baristas using it in the 2012 New Zealand Barista Championships
A tool targeted at barista efficiency: All the coffee grinds are funneled into the portafilter - no more spillage & waste. And so easy to use...
We are very proud of where the Coffee Catcha has come in the last year. The 2011 NZBC saw one barista using a Coffee Catcha, this year there were 8 competitors using it. This shows that the product is not only effective in the cafe / commercial environment, but also at the highest barista level.
Watch the video as it explains everything from the "horses mouth" including from Hide Kono, 2011 New Zealand barista champion who competed in Colombia.
The facts:
8/30 competitors opted to use a Coffee Catcha
2 of those made the top 5 with one coming 3rd
The competitors using a Coffee Catcha achieved consistent marks of 5.5/6 & 6/6 for "acceptable waste/spill when dosing/grinding"
Testimonials you will hear / see in the video:
"It's just so easy. It just catches all the coffee" - Hide, winner, 2011 NZBC
"Waste is points. You waste coffee, you waste points" - Mark, semifinalist 2012 NZBC
"It reduced 99% of the waste" - Nick, 3rd place, 2012 NZBC. Nick also approached Espresso Corp to use a Coffee Catcha for the semis and finals as he saw other competitors using it and reducing waste / mess
VIDEO: Leanne using the Coffee Catcha, NZBC 2011
This is a follow up video from the April 10 post - now with a video of Leanne using the Coffee Catcha in the NZBC.
The Facts:
73/77 from BOTH technical judges (top scores of the day)
The Coffee Catcha eliminates wastage & mess
All coffee grinds end up in the portafilter giving a consistent dosage
Highest technical marks in the NZ Barista Champs confirms what the Coffee Catcha is all about...
Leanne Waite, Altura Coffee's head barista trainer recently competed in the NZ Barista Champs in Wellington. She decided to use a Coffee Catcha as she found it helped reduce mess / wastage. Using a Mahlkoenig grinder meant that the Coffee Catcha was only needed to funnel the coffee grinds (and not needing to scrape). This worked out perfectly, as it mean she could get a consistent dosage every time with all the grinds funneling into the portafilter - and of course, it reduced mess / wastage at the same time. The technical judges obviously realised how good the Coffee Catcha was as they gave Leanne the highest marks (for technical) - a 73/79 and a 73/79.
World Barista Champs accredited "judge of the judges" Chris White said that you simply couldn't fault Leanne for wastage, because there was none.
Thank you Coffee Catcha!
