Dosing coffee with the EK 43 grinder & Coffee Catcha
At the 2013 WBC, Matt Perger from Australia went outside the norm and shocked / impressed everyone by using a new grinder - the Mahlkoenig EK 43. Since then, this grinder has been the talk of the town and is now being used in dozens of cafes around the world. The wait time if you order one now is 2+ months!
This video shows Craft Coffee from Shoreditch London using the Coffee Catcha. They use it for every dose and see it as the perfect dosing tool to help funnel all the coffee into the portafilter. For those new to the EK, this video is a good watch to see how some of the trendiest baristas are now dosing!
The benefits of the EK are that it has a more consistent grind meaning most of the coffee is ground to a uniform size. When pre-dosing / weighing shots, it gives a perfect dose every time if you are also weighing the volume output too. This Is a more time consuming method, however the consistency and accuracy of taste / quality is arguably better due to the greater control. Having tasted a few brews, it seems to do that job well!
