Frank Mahovlich, 1971-72, O-Pee-Chee.
Hailing from my hometown, Mahovlich was a big hero of mine and was essentially the first pro hockey player to be open about mental health. I got to see him on the ice when I was ten as part of a legends tournament against a local major team (the same night I met Maurice Richard).
Years later, I wanted to interview him about his childhood in the north. Left him a message. He returned the call and spoke to my then-partner, who left me a note: “Some guy named Frank called.”
We broke up a month later.
