From careful lips he drew the cigarette, murky tendrils of smoke flowing forth and reaching out all around him as he breathed out. It was a dark night, and quiet too, with no-one really bothering much with the train station. Every now and then, a late night train would roll in and one or two flustered looking souls would return from their journey from wherever. However, it had been some time since the last train had arrived. Watching its doors close and the beams of lighting bursting from within go dull had almost been a strangely lonesome thing.
Kael slipped the cigarette into his mouth once more before noticing footsteps some small distance behind him. He knew at once that they weren't one of Timber's inhabitants. After all, he came here often enough to know that no-one else really made a habit of sitting in a train station in the middle of the night. His nighttime habits were hardly a secret so it was unlikely, though not impossible, for the footsteps to have belonged to someone simply deciding he was worth checking up on.
He looked over his shoulder and watched the approaching silhouette with quite some caution, drawing the cigarettes from his lips yet again. With nothing but the dim lights of the town's many signs and displays to illuminate his surroundings, Kael was unable to truly relax though he was confident enough in his own abilities to defend himself without a second thought.
Once again, the cigarette was slipped between his lips and, as the shadow came ever close, he furrowed his brows, shoulders tensing. His fingers curled into tight fists. He knew he was being paranoid but he felt himself justified. Trusting total strangers was messy business and there was always that lingering worry that he might be recognised. He doubted that would make any difference but Kael was opting to play it safe rather than sorry.
"Oi", he said, at last, the cigarette now between his index and middle fingers, "What are you doing? You lost or something?"
