I really thought that film trilogies were more of a modern (like starting in the 60's) thing.

Sure there were films that had sequels from the start (Universal monsters, all those hammer films, B movies) but three with the same characters and theme, like the Godfather trilogy, or original Star Wars, not so much.

But there was a trilogy featuring a group of people with the Office of Scientific Investigation * produced by Ivan Tors which is made up of The Magnetic Monster (1953), Riders to the Stars (1954) and Gog (1954).

* Yes, the Office of Scientific Investigation or O.S.I. as featured in the TV series the Six Million Dollar Man, The Venture Bros., as well as a few others.

To say nothing of the Office of Scientific Intelligence that use to be part of the C.I. A.
