floating towards the light | hospital wing drabble
"There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in."
The darkness that surrounded her being began to ebb away, the colors shifting into deep grey. The numbness that she was living within during this time began to leave her, emotions drawing out deep within her as the colors around her began to lighten. She felt fear, anger and panic rising within her as she realized that she was aware, but not yet awake. She found herself in that fine grey light, filters of while beyond a veil she recognized from the last time she began to awake. But unlike the last time it wasn't violent, it was gentle like a kiss that was pressed to her forehead to wake her up. She shifted through the grey her hand reaching for the veil that she knew now would bring her into the light. This wasn't the same unconsciousness that took her in the arms of the aurors, it was under a spell or a potion that Katie recognized from her own dabblings in medical potions that she used upon herself. Katie pushed her hand through the veil and she was sucked forward into the light.
She gasped for a second, breathing hard, her eyes still squeezed shut as she awaited the pain to rip along her back. But none came, nothing but a heavy weight and the feeling of soft sheets on her skin. She breathed in tightly, and she could feel her hands that were tucked beside her head clutching onto the sheets as emotion began to overtake her and she found herself yet again transported to that time from long ago. The sound of heels on the linoleum morphed with the leather boots and swish of healers robes that brushed and clicked on white marble. The smell of antiseptic and linen bandages was were interchanged with the familiar but now sickening smell of vials of potions and gentle sheets that surrounded her. She could hear the buzzing in the background of talking, and she waited for a hand to reach for her shoulder, to look up and see someone clad in blue with sorrow filling his eyes. Telling him about the death of her mother, just like that night. But even as she awaited this she knew it wouldn't happen, she wasn't six years old, she was 17 and injured at Hogwarts. She was filled with panic rising in her chest, as emotion pulled her up. Her breathing began to rise and her heartbeat going faster than it ever had while she ran. Katie snapped her eyes closed her hands scrambling to hold onto the sheets she lay on, her chest tightening painfully and she squirmed trying to be free of invisible hands that held her down. Horror was pushed upon her, as she began to whimper and keen. Her eyes snapped open, pupils dilated as she attempted to get used to the light that now filled her vision. She twisted and let out a small cry, her back was healed but the pain still lingered and the tightening of her muscles let tears stream from her eyes. She felt hands grabbing her own and hold her gently to the mattress and she whimpered tightly.
"Mum? Mum?"
Her mother seemed to swim in front of her vision, like she did when she was a child and awoke from a nightmare, holding her wrists down so she wouldn't lash out as she woke up. But whoever was holding her down wasn't her Mum, Katie's eyes were unseeing as they ran over the stale white walls and the windows the overlooked the grounds but she could only see a blue sky from. She thrashed, her heart racing as tears streamed, her back screamed and words fell from her mouth.
"Mum! Da! Jenny!" she cried over and over again, before she felt another hand run over her hair and she gasped realizing that she wasn't wearing plaid pajamas and a large Oxford sweater that belonged to her father. She wasn't six years old woken up by a police officer or her baby sitter. She hadn't fallen asleep by her grandmother's bedside only to be woken up by a grey fallen face of the shell of what housed her grandmothers soul. She wasn't covered in blood and bleeding out in an alleyway and that dirt and blackened blood had been cleaned from her skin. She was at Hogwarts, healed, and thrashing and crying out under a pair of hands. Her ears finally opened even though her eyes were still hazed over with tears and terror that covered them with a dark film. Her racing heart and the bile of panic that filled her tight throat
"Katie! Katie!" the voice was familiar.
She did nothing but whimper as she laid on her side trying to control the horror that filled her body.
"Katie!"
Her name again, nothing but her name, slowly bringing her down to earth. She stared, unseeing, at the body that hovered over her, she still moved against the hands.
"Katie... please..."
It came out as a whisper and it drew her back, through the grey film of her eyes, through the panic in her throat and the darkness that covered her silly dizzy head. She laid there, suddenly stopping in her flailing, her breath being held in her lung before she exhaled, her mouth open as she tried to focus her vision. When it did she felt a weak smile draw across her lips and she gasped trying to find her vocal cords that lurked somewhere.
"...hey..." her voice rasped before she fell back into her sheets and pillows, shuddering and whimpering. She was home, safe, just for the moment, as she attempted to focus on the figure above her.
She was awake now.
