his voice is beautiful. that's what hits her first when the song starts. it's warm, wraps her up and spins her around into a frenzy of melodies and guitars strums and chords and–

sky's struck, that's what she's realizing. stephen's song is catching her off guard for all its worth, and she really doesn't know what to do with herself because of it. she'd always known he was good, could hear snippets of his voice in the mornings when she passed by the bathroom. (would pause just a little longer so she could hear him, embarrassingly.) but hearing it for the first time properly, with the music to back it up, the woman can't sift through the overwhelming feelings she's experiencing.

she's impressed, surprised, and absolutely jamming – head bobbing, toes tapping. can't begin to imagine how it'd sound live, or acapella. she wonders if he could sing it to her right now. she could ask! though the prospect alone makes her stomach flip, and for some reason that messes far too much with her head that she pulls back to refocus on the song.

but even that doesn't help anymore. because the longer she listens, the more she can feel her heart race. her eyes glance back up at him, but when their eyes meet, skylar looks away quickly. doesn't understand why, but pretends like it didn't happen. (pretends she didn't feel the hitch in her breath.) it's strange but not entirely new, which makes this even worse.

when the song stops, she takes off the headphones and sets them down slowly. tries not to focus on her beating heart or how she's beginning to sweat or her racing thoughts. instead, she turns to her musician of a roommate and friend in question.

"holy shit, steph, it's amazing. you're-" she takes stephen's hand, almost forgets that they'd only recently breach this physical contact boundary because it feels so natural. "you're amazing! you have to let me listen to more!"

she's a fan of his music, yes. that's it. she's his first fan and she experienced the excitement related to that. that's the explanation to how she felt... right? right?

she's nervous, twiddling fingers and tapping heels.

don't get her wrong, everyone's really nice. in fact, they're all great. every conversation she's been pulled into since arriving at freya's an hour too early has been great. nobody made her feel strange or different from anyone else. elias had even reassured her that everyone was getting to know each other still, basically a friend group that was beginning to form.

but still, it felt like a lot. new names, new faces. all of them either from julliard or tisch with her. amelia, yasir, indigo... she's still trying to consolidate all the new information, who did what, what they liked, who's with who-

"you're skylar, right?"

she looks up from her can of coke, blinking at the new voice. immediately knows who it is, seen him in her instagram stalking of the twins (may have stalked him too in the progress). was supposed to meet him a week ago with the twins, but had been pulled into a last minute audition. feels something warm and awful dawn on her the moment their eyes meet because, oh no, he's cute.

the words come tumbling out her mouth before she can stop them. "yes! i, uh- sky. skylar. you can use both i mean. use whatever you'd like."

he smiles, wide and charming and far too dazzling. "okay, sky skylar.... now is that one word or two?"

oh no, he's cute and funny.

"one word. i mean, it's just skylar. i... you're stephen."

"that i am. nice to finally meet you!"

"you too, stephen. to meet you, i mean."

he laughs a little at that, and she can't decide if the sound makes her stomach flip from embarassment or excitement. either way, he sits next to her on the couch, lounges easily. she has to stop herself from looking too hard, too much. wants nothing but to seem normal in front of him. doesn't understand why, but is sure she's already half-failing.

"so, remind me why you ditched us last week?" his words are immediate, and they drip with playfulness. doesn't help either that he's leaning closer to her.

her cheeks go hot and ruddy with colour, and she isnt' sure if it's because of the joke, his closeness, or how his nose scrunches. (it's probably a mix of it all.) oh god she's not built for this.
