☆ I don’t understand why but I love you || vernon
fanfic: idol!vernon x fem!reader wordcount: 3.3k PART ONE spotify playlist
(y/n) was late to the practice, and it was unlike her. at first her presence made vernon really nervous. she came into his life like a lightning storm.
It was just another day of practising a choreography for a song they wanted to put out into the world. manager jeon walked into the room right at the end of their session with her by his side.
“hello everyone, sorry to stop by on your practice day. I know how hard you’ve been working on the new album but as we all know, times are uncertain right now. this calls for a change in the company’s policies.”
he beckoned at the woman next to him who removed her mask at the signal. doing so, her wavy hair fell before her eyes, which she seemed unbothered by. she brought both her hands together in front of her chest and bowed slightly.
she introduced herself in english like it was natural to her. she closed her eyes for a second before switching to korean. “hi everyone, my name is (y/n) lee. I’m going to be your new manager.”
vernon’s heart dropped. what was this about a new manager? everyone turned to seungcheol hyung but he had mastered the art of keeping a straight face at times like these.
news of pledis’ ceo using hybe’s name to do money laundering spread across the world like wildfire. everywhere seventeen went, they were being asked how it was going to affect them. seungcheol hyung had the worst of it all. but the truth was none of them knew what was going to happen to them. until now.
“I’m going to be working with your existing managers and help you adjust through the new changes being brought to the company. basically all decisions will go through me before becoming final. I’m sure you’ll hear all about it soon from mr. jeon here. I want you to feel open to talk to me about anything at all so that we can get along and continue to make good music.”
she bowed again and took a step back, placing her hands back into the pockets of her pants, putting up a shield. as of that day, the ceo of the company was finalised and new staff were brought in chosen directly by him. (y/n) was one of them.
vernon clapped on cue, but he could feel the half-heartedness of everyone in the room. and so could (y/n).
everyone crowded around seungcheol as they headed to take a shower.
“what is this about a new manager, hyung!”?”
“will we get our contracts renewed?”
“how will this affect the new album?”
“what about brand endorsements?”
“will I have to delay the release of the movie?”
seungcheol turned around to face everyone. “first thing in the morning, I’ll meet (y/n)-nim for breakfast and ask her about the details, as much as possible. for now, don’t let this bother you. they can’t kick us out even if they wanted to.”
but the next morning, (y/n) was at their practice even before them. there she was just seated on the floor with a book in her hand. It was “a girl like a violet”.
when vernon walked in, he saw seungcheol hyung by her side. vernon waited on the opposite end of the studio for the rest while pretending to be busy. the music blasting in his headphones could not hide the tension in the air.
when all the members came in together seeing vernon’s text, (y/n) stood up and greeted everyone with a smile and a wave, just like she had with him. she stayed silent the entire time, observing them from a safe distance. she would scribble on a small book when they took breaks to go over the steps. this continued for a few weeks. she would either meet them at the start of the practice or at the end at least twice a week.
but it was friday already and she hadn’t shown up at all.
she took the entire team out for lunch one day where everyone tried to get to know her. she was nicknamed “the ice queen” among the staff for a reason. nobody knew anything about her besides that she grew up in london, she was a management major and she was heading ‘seventeen’ for now.
but as she said, she was quite approachable. seungcheol hyung was able to easily talk to her about their schedules for upcoming tours, sooyoung could ask her opinion about the dance moves being too complicated, jeonghan joked easily around her, seokmin and seungkwan got her to sing with them at karaoke during a going seventeen episode which was unaired. the members were given strict instructions not to reveal they were being managed by a woman to avoid unnecessarily rumours. when they took pictures and videos, they knew to leave her out of it.
but vernon couldn’t stop thinking about her. he noticed everything about her from the way she pulled her hair back when she was around them, the way she rolled her sleeves before she ate, the way her eyes got a dazy look every time they went for group dinners, the tension on her shoulders when she got a call she had to take outside, away from their earshot.
but there was nothing else vernon could do. he never got the chance to talk to her. the one time she wanted to speak to the hip-hop unit, she was called away for a meeting.
vernon fidgeted waiting for the car in the parking lot with his friends. he was listening to the demo he made for a solo song he probably wouldn’t even release. he knew exactly what it would sound like, but the lyrics were missing. there was nothing he could do to bring himself to write it out.
everyone started leaving one by one. when soonyoung asked if he should give a lift to vernon, something in him flipped.
“It’s okay hyung, I’ve left my charger upstairs. I’ll leave in some time.”
he rushed to the elevator, trying to mask his emotions. did something happen to her? had she decided to distance herself from them because of the new ceo?
the doors opened to the eighteenth floor, revealing dark hallways lit only by the hues of the striplight at the windows. he walked till the end where he knew her office was. the group had once greeted her there, thanking her for helping them out. vernon had memorised the view from there because the skyline reminded him of his own home in new york.
as soon as he brought his hand up to knock, he realised the door was open, so he peeked inside. (y/n) was sleeping on her desk, a bag of unopened takeout on the couch beside her. vernon resisted the urge to enter but curiosity got the better of him.
he walked closer until he reached her seat. her hair was falling over her eyes, covering her face in soft strands. It was getting late and there was nothing he could do. he couldn’t even bring himself to wake her up. somehow he didn’t want her to know he was there.
she moved in her sleep, her eyebrows scrunching. It was kinda chilly in the room. vernon took out a plain hoodie from his bag and slowly draped it over her, careful not to touch her. he would call the pledis on-call driver to keep an eye on her if it got too late.
right as he was headed out, he felt a tug. (y/n) was holding onto his sleeve, still asleep. a drop of tear rolled down her cheek as her jaw trembled.
“don’t go,” she mumbled. “haru…”
vernon’s heart dropped. he slowly removed her hand from his sleeve and placed it on the table. this was cold hard shaky ground. he was threading on something he could never come back from.
vernon ran to the elevator, a hand on his chest. he was seeing black now. his heart was pounding in his ears like the beats of one of his songs.
oh he really was screwed.
✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧
the next morning, what vernon dreaded happened. (y/n) was in the studio wearing the hoodie he had wrapped around her the night before. she was talking to jihoon and soonyoung about the choreography for their new song thunder.
“your dance is good, in fact, it’s a little too good. but it’s also complicated and the song is unlike what you’ve produced so far. we need something simple and catchy.”
soonyoung and chan decoded the steps the rest of the time while (y/n) went to attend a few calls in her office. she returned at the end of the practice with a hoodie in her hand.
vernon tried not to show his disbelief on his face. so it wasn’t his hoodie she was wearing.
“s.coups-nim?” she called out. “can I talk to you for a second?” he jogged over to her and they spoke in hushed tones, but the studio was so silent that everyone could hear her.
because everyone recognised whose hoodie she was holding, it had the mark of their band afterall.
“Is anyone missing their hoodie?” seungcheol hyung called out and the room looked at each other.
vernon felt the panic set in. he could say something and get away with it, maybe he missed it, maybe the laundry mistook her hoodie for his. okay that sounded stupid because she never gave her clothes to the laundry.
“It’s mine,” wonwoo had his hand raised in the air. “I left it in the dryer yesterday.”
“I think someone must have put it over you when you were staying over late.” seungcheol said.
“yes that’s what the help staff said too,” she smiled. “thank you guys. I’ll see you tomorrow then?”
everyone waved at (y/n) as she was leaving, a soft smile on her face. but vernon could swear she snuck a glance at him when wonwoo raised his hand. he had a feeling she knew he was lying, and that wonwoo was filling in for vernon, but she wasn’t saying anything. she could’ve easily checked the cctv but maybe she wanted to see his reaction at being confronted in front of others.
maybe she was reminding him that nothing could happen between them when it would not lead anywhere.
“hyung!” vernon cornered wonwoo at the end of the day at the parking lot. “can I talk to you for a second?”
both of them entered his car, waiting for vernon to address the elephant in the room, but before he could, wonwoo handed him the hoodie.
“be careful, hansol. think twice before you do anything. we’re not like other people.”
vernon knew that. he knew that so much that it physically hurt he couldn’t tell her that. “why didn’t you say anything?”
wonwoo clamped a hand on his shoulder. “we’re brothers, aren’t we? If I don’t have your back, then who will? It’s my secret too now, don’t worry. just don’t do anything you’ll regret later on.”
✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧
“everyone’s prepared for thunder.”
“I know they are. but like I said before, the new album feels different from your previous ones. we need to grab people’s attention first which means we need to…” (y/n) asked joshua what ‘mellow down’ in korean was and he helped her translate. “exactly thank you for that. only then will the song reach new fans.”
ever since (y/n) had joined them, they’d been working twice as hard. she was getting them sponsorships and brand endorsements like they were at the back of her hand - mingyu’s calvin klein campaign, jun’s chinese drama, world tours and international interviews. that seemed to be her main focus for their image now because she was really pushing them out into the world.
vernon felt like he was gonna be left behind in all this blur. he knew that the enlistment dates for wonwoo was getting closer and closer, and he wasn’t ready to say goodbye to him, or anyone else for that matter. he could get a pass since he had dual citizenship, but that would only make him miss the others even more.
vernon wanted to make his own music. he wanted to produce on his own, but that would mean talking to (y/n), and he was not in a mental state to do that. he would talk to jihoon hyung if he could. the problem came with the fact he only knew the music, he didn’t have any lyrics.
pledis originally wanted them to all enlist at the same time so that they’d be discharged together, but (y/n) had other plans in mind, ones that put vernon in an uncomfortable position. she called joshua and vernon over to her office one afternoon.
she was on the couch, looking at one of their concert clips. It was 2 minus 1, and vernon could already predict where this was heading.
“I want to know more about this song. how did you come up with it?”
joshua answered it when vernon remained silent. “we were offered an all-english track by the label, and vernon suggested we go for a pop-rock style. I like avril lavigne’s music a lot, so that’s the energy we tapped into.”
“I’m offering you the same now. for the new album, I want you to write a solo song. with everyone enlisting, I want the two of you to be able to sing your solos and make revenue out of it. that’s the alternative apart from me trying to get joshua a movie deal in hollywood. how does it sound?”
“what will we have to do for the solo?” vernon asked, speaking to her for the first time.
“simple lyrics like 2 minus 1, something from a personal aspect if you can. I know it’s hard to write from experiences but it might reach out a lot more to people who want to hear what you’re going through.”
she looked at vernon for a split second before a smile spread across her face as she faced joshua.
“relating to your experiences and your thoughts are what the fans expect, and this might be the best time to give them that. all attention will be on the two of you, apart from jun and minghao. I’ll hear both of your ideas by the end of this week? give me a sample, anything you can work with. feel free to explore and break boundaries because this album is exactly that.”
joshua was thrilled. he really loved making a song with vernon, and to be given that chance again, he was going to use it to the full potential.
as they were leaving to tell the others the good news, (y/n) made vernon stay back. joshua went ahead and closed the door, leaving vernon all alone with her.
the room suddenly seemed smaller than it was. vernon could practically hear the clock on the wall ticking, every beat mocking him for his feelings. he sat back down, facing her as nonchalant as possible.
“how did you come up with the song?” she asked again.
“It’s like joshua said. we wanted to create a song based on the pop-rock style.”
“and where did the lyrics come from? because they don’t seem made up to me.”
“we’re musicians. making lyrics up is our job.”
(y/n) raised her eyebrows, calling him out on his bullshit. vernon felt exposed in front of her now, she was staring right into his soul, expecting him to bare his feelings to her so that the wall between them broke.
they both knew what the other wasn’t admitting, and this was a time for no bullshit.
“I wrote it after I broke up with my girlfriend in high school.”
vernon had never told anyone this before, not even joshua, neither was he questioned when the lyrics came easily to him when they worked on the song. It was from the small handmade journal his sister had gifted to him after he got into hybe. it was also the time he broke up with his best friend, and the words came to him easily than ever.
“that’s how it happened.”
“and how did you feel writing your own song?”
It was as if she saw right through him. vernon didn’t know how he felt about it. “It was a heartbreaking time. It was the loss of a first love. joshua went through something similar when he moved to seoul for good. we just collaborated and were able to come up with something great.”
a small smile spread across her face, as if she had won a battle. “that’s exactly what I want from you for the solo. I’m glad we had this talk. I’ll see you soon then. vernon.”
vernon was sure she said his name on purpose. she must know how he reacted to her presence if she was making him do this. he spent the entire week working on the demo, because he finally had something to do apart from practice for the world tour. he scouted his old books for inspiration but the lyrics were unlike what he wanted to express at the moment.
but there was nothing to work with because he didn’t know what he was feeling. It was a blunder of emotions coming together as confusion. joshua on the other hand had something put together, which he played to (y/n) and jihoon hyung.
jihoon hyung was clearly unimpressed. (y/n) was nicer about it, saying that the vibe was different from what she was looking for for the album.
“keep working on it. I’ll listen again when (y/n) is free again.”
“what about you, vernon?”
he had nothing. he only had an idea, which had to do with stars and constellations, so he sang that with the tune he had in mind.
he didn’t expect them to like it, like at all. It was barely even an idea but they wanted him to work on it more. (y/n) had this dazed look on her face as if seeing a sunset for the first time. jihoon hyung had a neutral expression as always, but at the end of it, he nodded his head, clearly liking the vibe.
It didn’t end there.
(y/n) caught him in the elevator as they were leaving for the day, much to his dismay. the two of them were alone in the smallest possible space known to man.
vernon resisted the urge to blend with the walls, wanting to be as far away from her as possible. the faint scent of perfume blended in the air, lavender taking over his musk odour.
“I really liked your demo, by the way.”
why was she making small talk with him now?
“thank you,” he nodded.
“I love the tune for it. It’s catchy, which is what the album is going for. how did you come up with the concept of using the star sirius?”
“I like constellations. I just like knowing more about the world out there.”
“I love that. very very interesting. what inspired you this time around?”
vernon turned to face her. all the self restraint he had in the past few months were leaving him bit by bit. she was staring at him with doe eyes, eager to know his answer. he had been too preoccupied about what others might think when he should’ve been focusing on how he was feeling at the moment. there was no more time to hide anymore, not when she wanted him to be transparent.
“you.”
author’s note: this is my first seventeen fanfic ever and I hope I do justice to the carats fandom. as you all can see I have an unconditional and irrevocable crush on vernon (but he’s not my bias btw <3) stay tuned for future parts!
part 2 is out!

“𝑷𝑨𝑺𝑺𝑰𝑶𝑵𝑨𝑻𝑬”

He had gotten drunk the night before and had a horrible hangover happening.
“Don’t worry, I’ll treat you” Siah, the older child says and rushed to her room to bring out her doctors kit.
Cheol manages to open his eyes, but his head still throbbing.
Siah walks into the living room with a toy stethoscope around her little neck and a toy injection in the other hand.
Cheol sees his baby bringing all her doctor toys to him and chuckles. “Are you here to take care of me doctor?”
“I will fix you” she says. “Where does it hurt?”
A smiling cheol points to his forehead. “Here doctor”
She takes the toy injection in the other hand and directly puts it on his forehead. This makes seungcheol laugh. “Thank you doctor, you’re so nice”
