WORD OF THE DAY Sat, May 29, 2021 OED Word of the Day: oak-apple, n. Oak-Apple Day: the anniversary of the Stuart restoration to the English throne, when oak apples were traditionally worn in memory of Charles II hiding in an oak after the battle of Worcester.

This is the inside of an oak apple gall which is formed due to wasps taking over leaves from oak trees to lay a single wasp larvae.
