Can we talk about the last samurai? It's very underrated, and I feel that there's a stigma around it that makes people not engage with it, regardless of the fact that it's unjustified.

"It's a white savior movie" is only the tip of the iceberg, I've seen people online claim that it's racist because tom is playing a Japanese character, plus it being used in order to justify/point out racism in other movies, all of which makes no sense if you've seen the film.

(Whether it's accurate to history is another thing, but that's never the problem people have with it)

But it's so good! And Tom's performance in it... damn

BIG agree on all of this. i think what really hurt The Last Samurai is the marketing. Tom being the Big Name Actor in it and heavily featured in the posters definitely led to all sorts of misunderstanding about the movie. plus the very confusing title. the title was never meant to mean the last singular samurai, of which a lot of people then wrongly assume is meant to refer to Tom's character, but the title is actually referring to the last group of samurai which the story of the movie centers around, of which Tom's character is almost merely a witness and not much else.

Nathan being there is completely within the realms of possibility, and he is never shown as better or more capable than the samurai that took him in. they train him, and he rises to their level, but he was never made the leader or the savior of the people. the samurai would've made that last battle stand, with or without him, and he chooses to ride alongside them, to die with them should it come to it.

but then he survives, not because he's better or more skilled, but entirely because of luck. there was no glory in surviving, and he absolutely did not save anything.

and most importantly, it was never about him. this was Katsumoto and his samurai's last stand, this is their story. and the ceasefire and kneeling of the soldiers were for Katsumoto and his samurai, and it was never for Nathan.

he bears witness to the lives and tales of the last samurai, and he lives to tell their story. if anything, he's the Watson of the movie, whereas the samurai are the main characters and shining stars and the focal point of the movie, the Holmes, if you will.

all things considered, i don't think many people who cite the movie as a White Savior movie have actually seen the movie.

(and YES Tom's performance in it is SO GOOD. but that's almost a different post entirely)

7. a pre-canon headcanon

Maverick has tried mechanical bull riding. Goose took him. He fell off many many times. Many jokes (affectionate) were had about how Maverick couldn't handle a maverick.

8. a post-canon headcanon

Maverick learns to play the piano. He didn't know how to play before but after he kept buying pianos for Rooster, he basically had to learn.

putting this out there so this isn't just something that lives in @threeoaksy and i's heads

but Barry, when it comes down to it, really just wants proof that he's good at something other than killing

and it'd probably do him a world of good if he got into plants

i can see him being gifted a succulent and becoming very attached to it, and extensively researching how to take care of it

and slowly getting more plants, ones that are more difficult to take care of, but he's determined

the image of Barry frantically googling how to save his dying orchid just makes me really happy

i just want Barry to be happy, maybe retire somewhere, with his plants and maybe an animal or two

Goose and mac hanging out: what kind of tv do they like to watch?

I honestly think Maverick and Goose love watching like fast things. Car races, shows about trucks, planes, motorcycles. They feel the need, the need for speed after all.

Also it's canon they watched a show about truckers together, so I am at least partly right.
