On November 3rd 2008, the day before the U.S. Presidential elections, I created my first urban land art piece in Barcelona. “Expectation” was a giant ephemeral portrait of Barack Obama created on the city's beachfront on land administered by the Forum de les Cultures. The project embodied the huge sense of hope felt around the world – its scale, location, and materiality alluded to the global impact of his candidature and the victory for racial equality that was to come. The portrait measured approximately two and a half acres - one hectare. It was created using donated materials (650 tons of soil, sand and gravel), high precision GPS and the support of numerous volunteers. The title refers to the huge sense of anticipation that was building in the lead-up to the elections. The hope that Obama awoke across the globe showed that the world was searching for a hero to create a peaceful future. Though I feel that he may have tried to achieve that better future the reality today is that there is still institutionalised racism in the United States, an attempt for the right to universal healthcare that will soon be dismantled, there is denial of global warming from incoming heads of state, the Guantanamo Bay detention camp is still open, countless families were torn apart because of record numbers of deportations, never ending drone wars in the middle east, etc. The piece encouraged a dialogue about the uncertainties of our time, our irrational way of dealing with it as a society by pinning all our hopes on one person when they seem not to be part of the status quo. "Expectation" was a giant mandala created as a way to pray for change, but it was also a reminder that our hope for real change can be so fleeting.
