Jamaican-Bajan Obeah and Nsibidi?
I came upon these obeah symbols (first images) from Jamaica in L. W. de Laurence’s The Obeah Bible. via [+]. The symbols bear a strong resemblance to nsibidi characters and Cuban anaforuana, especially with the short strokes that end the longer strokes which is characteristic of most nsibidi, in fact I’m almost certain the character on the (top) right is nisbidi, they also bear resemblance to the nsibidi for moon and the nsibidi name itself (last two pictures). Nsibidi is present in some form in Cuban anaforuana and to a lesser extent Haitian veve. L. W. de Laurence’s book is banned in Jamaica and I haven’t read the book yet, so maybe some Caribbeans out there know more.
SN: Interestingly, the ‘seal of the character of the moon’ is reminiscent of the moon pattern (top marks) in ichi facial marks of the Nri-Igbo mbùríchi (known as breechee in British America, including Jamaica and colonial Virginia). [here]. The majority of those (Igbo) enslaved were from this northern Igbo region.
