Now that we know the main reasons as to why books are challenged, let’s find out who is behind these challenges. Based on the American Library Association’s (ALA) data, mainly parents (42%) and library patrons (31%) challenge books and most of them are in public libraries (49%) and schools (30%). However, throughout history more and different kinds of people and groups of all persuasions than you might first suppose, who, for all sorts of reasons, have attempted—and continue to attempt—to challenge books. Hopefully with the celebration of Banned Books Week, we can raise awareness of widespread book challenges and promote access to books for everyone.
