At Whole Foods in Tribeca I again spotted this beer from Bell’s Brewing in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Oberon Ale dates back to the late 1990s, so I can’t really say that the name and logo were inspired by a certain Game of Thrones character and his house’s sigil. But if you’re a fan of Oberyn Martell and were hosting a social gathering of people of legal age, this seems like the obvious brew for the occasion. You can see the logo a bit better here.

If you get a case or a 12 pack, be sure to draw a spear. ;)

Perhaps these similarities are a bit of a stretch, but there are about 10 to 13 months to kill before the start of Season 8. And perhaps Dorne will make an appearance. Dorne is the most distant part of Westeros from the Army of the Dead and it may be too hot, even in winter, for the White Walkers.

Review: Bell's Oberon (Tap)

Most summer American Wheat style ales are not very good, but Oberon is an exception. It's a simple beer but the flavors are spot on: great honeybread fluffy malts, lots of bright citrus, a little lemon zest for brightness. Simple beer done well.

Bell's Oberon Ale; Bell's Brewery (Comstock, MI, USA); ABV: 5.80%

As we bid farewell to summer and welcome fall (thank God), it seems only fitting to combine the two: a summer ale and some football (preseason, of course, but it’s still football!).

I drank this Oberon Ale while eating some spicy buffalo chicken pizza, so it’s possible that my taste buds were a little too messed up to judge this one correctly. If that’s the case, then I will eat buffalo chicken pizza every damn time I drink this little guy.  This beer, a tasty wheat ale, is extremely smooth. It went down easy from the moment the cap was popped off to the second the last drop hit my tongue.

The aroma reminds me of orange rinds, which is an entirely pleasant scent that lends itself well to the “smells like summer” claim that Bell’s has printed on the label. This citric attribute along with the smoothness of the drink made me taste a faint undertone of – and bear with me here – an orange creamsicle. That probably sounds gross since ice cream and beer don’t mix all that well, but I thought it was delightful. And it was very faint. It could very well be the flavors of the ale and the pizza together that were playing with my taste buds but I was very impressed with how subtly flavorful this one was.
