You stomped your foot down. "Absolutely not!"
The King remained calm, only angering you further. He sat on the Celestial Throne, an ivory seat embellished with extravagant golden details. An unknown light shined behind him, making appear even more heavenly, almost as if he were the sun, all-powerful and above all. The guards next to him tightened their grips around their spears at your outburst.
"Y/N, I am more than aware how hurt you would be. Lilith was quite close to you, and you have all the right to be upset. However, I am obligated to uphold the very guidelines that I have made. Considering the laws that Lilith have broken, an execution is only fitting."
Simeon's fingers interlaced with yours, squeezing your hand in assurance. Though it was a silent gesture, his actions spoke a million words to you.
Remember, don't lose your cool. I'm right here. Everything's going to be okay.
"That's ridiculous, Your Majesty! Lilith had no ill intentions, she was only trying to save her loved one! You would’ve done the same, she’s your daughter for heaven’s sake!" you fought back. Simeon squeezed your hand even tighter.
"That's all the more reason to punish her," he responded. "You and I are both aware that angels are not to interfere with business in the human world. She not only had a relationship with a human, but also gave him food from the Celestial Realm and altered his lifespan. All of which are fatal crimes."
Simeon spoke up. "Your Majesty, I am more than aware of what Lilith did, but execution is simply not acceptable. If you're going to punish her, then please... do anything but execution."
"He's right," you added. "We won't let you kill her. Ever."
The King pressed his lips together, showing slight frustration. Though he always maintained an unusually calm demeanor, it was clear that he was no longer willing to listen to you and Simeon anymore.
The Celestial King stood up from his throne, his golden eyes boring into yours. "Are you suggesting that you're willing to rebel against me?"
Simeon shook his head. “No, Your Majesty, we're simply just trying to reason-"
"Yes," you interrupted. “We are more than willing to fight against you. We have the eight siblings on our side, and surely hundreds more angels who will fight alongside us. We may respect you...but that doesn’t mean we’re afraid of you.”
“So I see that my children are also in on this...” he mused to himself, gritting his teeth. He took a few steps forward towards the two of you. You and Simeon squeezed each other’s hands, standing your ground.
“Go ahead and tell my children to prepare for battle. But in the meantime, I’ll be teaching you a lesson. A lesson that will stay with you for as long as the three realms exist.”
An orb of light began to form in the palm of his hand, and before the two of you could react, it was shot directly towards the two of you, causing you and Simeon to fly out the gates of the royal celestial room. Simeon was quick to put his body in front of yours, embracing you as a wave of shocking pain rippled through the two of you, your back throbbing from hitting the cold metal of the gates.
Simeon kept his arms locked around you in an embrace to keep you safe. When the two of you landed on the ground, he lifted himself onto his elbows on top of you and asked, “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”
You hissed in pain, your back already feeling bruised. “I’m fine, plus, you should be worrying about yourself more than me. You’re the one who took the hit.”
He simply smiled in response. “Anything for you.”
Before you could respond, you turned to see His Majesty walking out of the very gates that he hit you through. His face still remained annoyingly calm and collected as he stopped a few feet in front of you.
“I have many laws here in the Celestial Realm, but there is only one that ultimately matters in the end: no angel ever disobeys me.”
Your fingernails scratched the ground beneath you in pure anger. You recklessly lunged forward from the ground in a pathetic attempt to attack him, but it was useless. The King simply caught your fist in his hand, smiling condescendingly above you.
He then roughly pulled you up from the ground, his hand still gripping your fist. You tried to let go, but his grip was simply too tight. Simeon then wrapped his gloved hand around the King’s wrist, sending him a glare. “I suggest you let go of their hand this instant. Otherwise, that wouldn’t be very angel-like, wouldn’t it?”
The King refused to let go. “It’s quite amusing how you’re talking about what is angel-like and what isn’t angel-like. Because I know very well that you won’t even be worrying about that once you’ve become a fallen star.”
Simeon’s eyes widened at his words, his fingers slowly loosening around his wrist. He let out a breathless whisper, “No...”
“Yes,” he responded, letting go of your hand. At the snap of his fingers, he transported the three of you to an unknown area, possibly at the edges of the Celestial Realm, where no angel chose to dwell in. He then began to walk towards you slowly, forcing the two of you to walk backwards.
You stumbled back, your hand instinctively finding Simeon’s. You looked behind you. It was only then when you realized there was a cliff behind you, only a few yards away.
Tears began to well into your eyes, panicking as you could do nothing but shakily step towards the edge of the cliff more and more. Your chest heaved up and down in dread, slowly beginning to realize what was going to happen to the two of you.
“Listen, we’re going to be okay, Y/N. I know we are,” Simeon whispered to you. He interlocked his fingers into yours. “Don’t worry, darling. I’m right here.”
In a panicked state, you got onto your knees, letting go of Simeon’s hand. You gripped onto the fabric of the holy robes of the king in nothing but pure desperation.
“Please, Your Majesty,” you quietly begged, your voice broken. “If you wish to punish us, then do so in battle. You can hurt us as much as you’d like but... do anything but banishment. Please.”
Simeon’s eyebrows furrowed as he saw you on your knees, begging the King for mercy. He knew you for centuries, and you had never gotten on your knees for anyone before, not even the Celestial King himself. He couldn’t bear to see you like this, not even if his life depended on it. You shouldn’t have to kneel for your life. You shouldn’t have to beg for mercy from anyone. Not even from the King himself.
He marched forward and knelt down next to you in front of the King. “Your Majesty, please, let me be the one to fall. I was the one who started this so...so I should be the one to take the blame. Please just spare Y/N’s life.” Simeon lifted his head to meet the King’s gaze. “Both for them...and for me.”
Your heart wrenched at Simeon’s words, tears spilling down your cheeks. You couldn’t even find the right words to respond. He was willing to take the fall for you, even when he knew how painful it is. He was willing to lie for you, knowing fully well that you were the one who actually started all of this. He was willing to throw away his glory and dignity as an angel, just so you could have a chance to survive.
The King sighed. “It’s a shame. It really is. I was hoping the two of you could fight alongside me one day, but unfortunately, your chapter seems to end here. Goodbye.”
He gave the two of you one final blow, a wave of pain hitting you once again as you felt your body lurch backwards and off the cliff, off the edge of the Celestial Realm, and off the high pedestal of glory that you once stood on. You let out a silent scream as you saw the King one last time.
As your body fell against the cold, strong winds, you heard Simeon shouting your name nearby. You whipped your head around and saw him holding his hand out towards you, his hair and robes whipping in the air. You stretched your arm out, your fingertips barely finding Simeon’s.
He gripped your hand and pulled you into his arms, holding you more tightly than he had ever did in the centuries that he knew you. You heard the flap of Simeon’s white, feathery wings before feeling them wrapping around the two of you protectively. He cradled your head in his hand as you buried your face into the crook of his neck.
As you two continued to fall, you a dark, ridged crown beginning to grow from Simeon’s head. You let out a gasp. “S-Simeon... You’re g-growing horns-”
“It’s okay, Y/N, it’s okay,” he whispered into your ear. He rubbed the back of your head in assurance. Though you couldn’t see his face, you could hear his voice cracking as he tried his best to keep reassuring you. “I’m fine, Y/N, and you’ll be just fine as well. You’re strong, stronger than me, even. I know we’ll be alright.”
You let out a choked sob at his words. Your arms began to tremble as you watched the white feathers of Simeon’s wings slowly become stained with black, one by one. White feathers than began to swirl around you as new ones grew in, now a dark raven color.
You soon began to feel horns of your own grow on your head as well. As if he’d run out of words, Simeon turned his head and kissed you on the temple. He was right here with you.
It had started to feel like you’d been falling for hours, but then you began to notice that the blue sky was slowly turning darker and darker, just like a sunset. Soon enough, the sky you were falling through was now a dark, deep purple, and the vast cities within Devildom were beginning to become more visible. You gripped the fabric of Simeon’s shirt.
As the ground grew closer and closer, a million thoughts began racing through your mind. How would you land? Where would you land? Could the demons see you and Simeon falling? Would it hurt? Would the two of you even survive the fall?
In the midst of the uncertainty, you pressed your lips against Simeon’s cheek, murmuring a quick “I love you.” He let out a sad laugh and murmured an “I love you” back.
It was becoming clearer that the place you two would be landing was near the Royal Castle of Devildom. You squeezed your eyes shut and braced for the impact of the landing. The ground was getting closer and closer, a hundred feet, fifty, ten, five...
A sharp, rippling pain hit your body, so painful to the point where you felt like every bone in your body had shattered into pieces like fragile glass. Your head pounded, the surrounding shouts and yells around you completely muffled. Your vision was hazy, but you could make out Simeon’s face next to you, a streak of blood running down his forehead and face, staining his newly grown horns, his dark wings lay limp on his sides.
He gave you a weak smile, tears falling from his beautiful blue eyes. His hand found yours as tears poured down your cheeks, stinging the cuts on your face. The both of you were hanging on a thin string of consciousness, your eyelids feeling heavier and heavier.
Were you dying? Or blacking out? What was going to happen to you? But even in the midst of uncertainty, there was only one thing that mattered in the end:
Whatever was going to happen to you, Simeon was right there with you, holding your hand, just like he had for centuries.
