Hawk wasn’t born in Hallow Grove. In fact, Hawk wasn’t even born Hawk. His name upon birth had been Sidney. Last name unknown. But if you asked him about where he was from, he’d tell you Hallow and nothing else because nothing in his life mattered before then. Hawk was given up as a baby. Dropped on the steps of a fire station with nothing but a blanket and a note that said “My name is Sidney” in the shittiest chicken scratch ever. He wasn’t even dropped off inside. Just left outside for the station to be found by the firefighters who worked there.
He bounced around from foster home to foster home. The longest he’d stayed in one home had been 3 months, until he was 9 years old. It was at 9 years of age that he finally found his way to Marielle Pike. Marielle had a habit of taking in troubled youth and straightening them out. She only took older children, preferably before they reached puberty, because she felt they needed her the most. Most of the kids that came through Marielle’s door went on to be adopted. None stayed for more than three years. Not because they weren’t welcome, but because Marielle felt she had done everything she could do with the child and they needed a family and not just a home.
However, when Sidney came along she knew he’d be a tough one. She could see it by the look in his eyes alone. He was jaded, and didn’t trust worth a damn. When she asked him his name he didn’t respond. Rather, he just looked at the ground. When his social worker tried to answer for him, Marielle cut her off informing her she’d been speaking to him and not her. Marielle then crouched down in front of Sidney and after a long moment of just staring at the child she said something that would stick with him. “You don’t have to tell me your name. Because today you’re getting a new name. I’m going to call you Hawk.” When Hawk finally graced her with his eyes, she asked, “You mind if I call you Hawk?” The boy shook his head indicating he didn’t mind. “Well Hawk, your old name is apart of your old life, and just like your old name you need to let it go and move forward.”
Hawk hadn’t realized the weight she’d lifted off his shoulders that day until he was much older. Marielle had a way at looking at life that made it seem magical. Like every breath was precious. She brought optimism to a child who saw none, and spent days changing the way he viewed the world but never tried to change him. And when he hit puberty two years later, she offered him something she’d never offered any child before. Marielle offered to adopt Hawk. Following through on the offer when he accepted. His adoption certificate became one of his most prized possessions. In it they legally changed his name from Sidney to Hawk Pike. Hawk has the certificate framed on his wall. Like a someone would have pictures of diploma or something.
Being adopted made him an official member of the pack Marielle belonged to. He watched how the alphas within the Mitchell pack acted and emulated their behaviors. Often times this managed to get Hawk into trouble. Especially when it came to fighting, something Hawk was good at before and only got better at as he got older. Which became a rather large problem ended with a fallen wolf who never got back up, and with a parking lot full of witnesses there was no way that Hawk wasn’t going to prison.
With his previous offenses, Hawk was sentenced with five years for involuntary manslaughter, but got out in three due to good behavior. During his time in prison, Hawk learned many things about himself. One being how to settle his anger and impulsive side. He took up drawing and art classes. Art had always been an outlet for him since he was never any good at formal education matters. He also took EMS courses. The EMS had been something his lawyer suggested. Said it would directly contradict the idea that he was killer and that it would look good.
Something about it stuck with him since one of the first things Hawk did once he was out, aside from the usual suspects, was join the fire academy. The man also took more of an interest in his hometown and community matters. Doing whatever he could to support his friends and his mom. Having been away for three years really showed him how much he missed them, as well as how much he wanted to care for the people he cared about in anyway he could.
After graduating from the fire academy, Hawk was earnest to get a job in Hallow Grove. It took him longer than he wanted, but shorter than he would have expected being a convict. Part of that due to his EMS certificate, and another he thought due to him being from Hallow Grove. A fact that earned him the trust of his chief, and gained him a probationary chance. He was happy either way. When he isn’t working a shift at the fire house, he can be found doing a tattoo in his spare room of his apartment, shooting at the gun range, or helping his mom. Tattooing became another way to continue his art. He doesn’t charge for it, instead he takes favors. Though he may seem a bit more straight-laced, Hawk would still do something stupid or illegal, especially for those he loves or considers important. Even if it meant he’d be back in prison.
