She returned the smile. It was wide, and it was matched by sincerity in her eyes. “It’s Inari,” she said, emphasizing the trailing i sound. “But don’t worry, I hear that one all the time.”

She offered him a pale hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Jason.”

The woman looked down off the rail of her ship, hair a tangled mess from the salt air and glared at the merman following after her boat. The breeze knocked her loose shirt about, giving glimpses of her soft flesh underneath, but her gaze was anything but soft. “If you’re going to sing and try to lure me under,” she said tartly. “Please get it over with, so I can proceed in hacking you to bits. Otherwise get away from me bloody boat. You are spookin’ me crew.”
