Arcane genuinely had some of the best pacing and storytelling I’ve seen in a while. The creators of Arcane not only clearly understand how to tell stories visually, but they recognize the strengths of animation and they USE THEM to incredibly great effect.

One of the best examples is the fight between Jinx and Ekko. They found a very fun, stylized way to give us some important exposition - that Jinx and Ekko didn’t just grow up alongside each other, they were actually friends who were close enough to have a unique game they played with each other, and that the fight between them now is a perversion of that former game - without needing to stop the current action or disrupt the rising tension to go back into a flashback. They told us everything we needed to know about Jinx and Ekko’s relationship while maintaining the tension they had been building, which means that when the momentum finally does come to a halt when Ekko hesitates to hit Jinx, you feel that sudden stop in momentum so much more strongly than you would have otherwise. AND you have all the back story necessary to feel the heartbreak of that moment.

It’s masterfully done AND beautiful to watch.
