9. Has any of them had to be saved from the brink of death? Were there any consequences after?
One that comes to mind is my necromancer, Adrian. In his setting (modern fantasy universe, which I'm just calling the Fae World for now) necromancy is a practice that is somewhat stigmatized, regulated, but still readily taught. Adrian is a professor of necromancy, and it was during a practice session with one of his grad students that he very nearly died.
Magic in general requires a lot of focus, necromancy especially because of how the magic draws out one's own energy and body mass: without concentration the flow could stop or, in this case, start going far too quickly. Adrian's student got distracted--by no fault of their own--and he had to step in and stop the process before they were killed. He succeeded, his student was unharmed and everything was stopped, but the magical draw focused on his arm. It was gone, dead and withered on the spot, before either of them even had the thought to call an ambulance.
Adrian has a rather eccentric personality, and he takes this experience as more of a lesson than anything. Later on, he does start using magical prosthetics--an enchanted limb capable of independant movement and sensation--but this is not without its own drawbacks. The prosthetic can "feel" but it's still prone to being uneven, with sensations either being too dull or painfully heightened (and it only does so much to help with phantom pains), and the issues are somewhat similar with movement as well. All things considered, the consequences are pretty much what one would expect after losing a limb.
As with nearly every character I have so far in this universe, Adrian serves as a sort of worldbuilding focus point. I find it much easier to build out magic, social, and political systems when I have some Guy to dunk into situations relating to it.
Thank you so much for the ask!

Thank you @dadtron-3000 for providing the concept art and helping me add endless depth to Adrian <3 And thank you @jardanijovonovichs for helping finalize her and bring her to life!!!

I redrew the original cause I didn't like it xp.
Adrian can have a little murder, as a treat
I'd love to hear more about your original writing! I see you tag things about your OCs and they sound like really interesting characters!! 😄
ohoohooo you’ve just opened the biggest can of worms you can imagine
okay so this started out nearly a year ago as my attempt to come up with a main character whose strengths are primarily more “feminine” traits- like, much as I love a badass, cutthroat, take-no-shit heroine, I always felt like that sort of fell into the trap of “strong female character = female character who is strong by masculine standards”. so I wanted to come up with a character who’s kind and empathetic, who loves recklessly and would probably lose a fistfight because she just doesn’t want to hurt anyone like that, but all of those are good things- basically, instead of a “soft character is hardened by the cruel world” arc, I wanted it to be “soft character learns that emotional vulnerability is a strength, and continues to be soft”.
other Things I Wanted To Write About are: boys being emotionally open, female characters whose defining life moments are unrelated to men/romance, found family, open communication in relationships, a female character in the “loveable goofball” archetype, a coed college soccer team, chaotic bisexuals in love, and dark forces/cryptids/monsters.
SO one thing led to another and we got Leah Phaidros: ENFP/2w3, volunteer EMT, soccer midfielder, smart but a terrible student, fiercely loving and fiercely stubborn golden-retriever-in-human-form who would do anything for her friends. about a year before the story begins, she had a traumatic accident/near-death experience that caused long-term nerve damage in her left arm. Leah’s learning how to deal with the fallout from that trauma and the ways that almost dying has changed her perspective.
Her best friend/eventual love interest is Adrian Mendez: ENTP/3w4, son of an internationally famous soccer player. he’s affable and sociable, the sort of person who can talk himself into or out of almost any situation. he’s also dealing with the shadow of his mother’s soccer career- he wants to succeed on his own merits, not because of who he’s related to, so he’s determined to prove he deserves everything he’s given. organized, whip-smart, diplomatic and loyal.
the other characters are less developed, mostly bc there are a lot of them, but the other two main players are:
Seth (INFP, 4w5) is basically the combined personalities of every art student I know- head in the clouds, imaginative, a hopelessly idealistic foil to Leah’s more pragmatic worldview. he’s Leah’s best friend and Adrian’s roommate.
Sophie (INTJ, 8w9) is a tiny, angry lesbian who can take down someone twice her size. She looks like tinkerbell, she swears like a sailor, she’s abrasive and rude and she’s one of Leah’s favorite people.
the vibe I’m going for is Dark Athletica, an aesthetic that I made up which has lived in my head rent-free for the past 6 months. basically: a soccer team with a dark secret, dark figures lurking on the way home from practice, secret frat parties with speakeasy vibes. (here’s my moodboard for it- cw for blood and bruising) the team’s from a school in massachusetts, and their mascot/name is The Renegades, which is why I tag anything related to these guys as #renegades!
I’m putting drawings of these guys under the cut bc this post is getting long, but yes I have a LOT of content related to this story and I am always down to talk about it!!
NIGHTMARE ( adrian / darknesscame )
@darknesscame
Simon didn't know the man's identity, but he knew just by the feel of him in his dream that it was the same person who had kidnapped him. He felt eyes on him, despite not being able to see anyone. He felt like he was being watched. He knew he was.
The PL tried to quicken his pace, to get away, but like an animal on the hunt, he could feel the invasive presence of the man following closely behind him until hands wrapped around his mouth and torso, dragging him backwards. Simon tried to scream as a device was shoved into his access panel and began to hack his systems.
'No, no!' He didn't want to enter stasis. He couldn't afford to. Who knew what would happen to him if he fell asleep instead of fighting this person. But the device made him so tired, and the stranger's shushing and purring for him to relax so it could all be over soon, sent the PL right to sleep.
The next thing he knew, Simon was blind, his whole world in complete darkness. He could hear a voice laughing darkly and feel hands tearing out his biocomponents but he couldn't move. All he could do was lie there in paralyzed horror until he woke up from the dream with a start.
