Introducing my fan Splat Band - Shine On, Sea Dogs!

The first pic are their first designs and the head shots are the updated ones.

The super colorful one is Sparkle (she prefers Sparky), a firefly squid with the same ink condition as Yoko (but with more control over the colors) and rainbow vitiligo.

The octoling is Pubby, who's more lovecore than scene. She's got multiple pins holding her afro up

And the Sharkling is Doug, a forty year old dogfish who's only in the band to keep the girls safe from weirdos. (His was design was too perfect to change, he's just a guy and I love him so much.)

Ask me about these goobers if you want, I love them 🥺

Wanted to draw a comic for this idea, but i can't make good art, so I just wrote the dialogue.

Here's my txt file I wrote in just copy pasted

Doug (40s) and Kshitija (like 8 or 9) walking home from school

[Red]

Miss Rehema taught us about Earth today.

[Doug]

Hm?

[Red]

We learned about all kinds of weather but my favorite was umm, snow. Snowflakes.

[Doug]

Snowflakes? What do you like about them?

[Red]

How they're all unique, and their patterns, they're really ,uh, intri..intricate...

[Doug] (mumble)

Where'd you learn that word?

[Red]

She showed us a bunch of pictures, and said that maybe one day we'll be able to see them for real. I wanna...

[Doug]

(sigh)

I wish she wouldn't talk like that with you kids.

[Red]

Like what?

[Doug]

The future.

Gettin' all your hopes up like that.

[Doug]

We're never going back.

[Red]

But Dad, don't you want to?

Your jobs to discover stuff... so aren't you curious about what it could be like out there after all this time?!

[Doug]

(Grumble)

[Doug]

Curiosity killed the cat you know. And that aint my job anymore, im barley an engineer neither, more like some washed up mechanic.

[Red]

But you said that cat thing was just an expression..

[Doug]

It is, but that don't mean its meaningless.

We wanna know whats out there, but thats the thing, we dont know.

[Red]

There's probably nothing out there, nothing bad!

[Doug]

And there could also be anything out there. There could be something bad.

Thats what makes it dangerous, thats what makes that kind of curiosity dangerous.

[Red]

But isn't curiosity a good thing? It helps us learn... thats good right?

[Doug]

It is but... We just don't know, and we can't afford to know.

[Red]

I think youre just too scared, Dad.

[Doug]

Maybe I am, but I haven't kicked it from doing somethin' stupid, so maybe that fears keepin' me out of trouble.

[Red]

You sound like uncle Sanjiv.

[Doug]

Sanjiv?!

[Red] (mopey)

Yeah, that old man always poops on my dreams... And he doesn't know how to have fun, "That's too dangerous!"

[Doug](curious, kinda slightly worried?)

Do you think i'm doing that right now..?

[Red]

Yes, Dad. All over!

[Doug]

Gross, kid...

I don't mean to, just trying to keep you from doin' something you might regret. Thats my job, to keep you out of trouble.

[Red]

I don't get into trouble!

[Doug]

Ha- then i must be doing my job well!

in comic/illustrated form this would have interspersed scenes of Red coming out of that portal for the first time. It would be lightly snowing outside and you can see her breath. These scenes would happen when Dougs going on his spheal about curiosity being bad

Doug was generally supportive, atleast moreso than sanjiv was. He would openly talk about the past with her, human culture and such. But the one thing he wouldnt sway on is that humans will never return to earth. He meant it out of care for Red, not wanting her to go out and get herself hurt, but it ended up making her all the more curious, eventually leading to her taking that leap and leaving to see earth herself at 20.

Part of him hated not being able to nurture her curiosity in that regard. Secretly deep inside, he wanted to go back . But he kept it in, and just sat on that frame of mind. He didnt like having hope. The mindsets he went by killed alot in him that he used to hold dear to him (curiosity, wonder, daring)
