Girion was the last Lord of Dale before the coming of the dragon Smaug to the Lonely Mountain. His mother was enamoured of the elves and attempted to give him an elvish name, though its translation is somewhat dubious as she did not actually speak Sindarin and had only ever met elves as they passed through Dale’s markets. Girion was the wealthy lord of a prosperous city, possessing a necklace set with five hundred emeralds, which he traded for a coat of dwarf-linked rings for his elder son, Asger. This coat was not of mithril, as the material was scarce at the time and worth more than even that grand necklace, but it was of fine dwarven make and would save Asger’s life in times of trouble. When Smaug descended upon Erebor, taking all its treasure for his own, Girion’s wife Kari led an evacuation of the city while Girion attempted to take down the dragon with a Black Arrow, also of dwarven-make. But though he managed to loose a single scale from Smaug’s breast, it was not enough to kill the beast, and Girion was consumed in dragonfire as Dale burned. Kari led the survivors of Dale down the River Running with her sons Asger and Einar covering their retreat. She resettled her people in Esgaroth, swearing loyalty to its Masters in exchange for protection and shelter, and she and her sons joined the common people. Asger traded his dwarven mail-coat to the Elvenking to provide for his father’s people, and he was ever bitter about the loss of his family’s heirlooms. But his younger brother Einar dared to pick through the ruins of Dale and discovered the Black Arrow amid the rubble, secreting it away and passing it down to his children along with tales of its magical qualities. Thus the Black Arrow made its way to Einar’s descendant Bard the Bowman, and the second time a man of the Line of Girion strung it to his bow and aimed for Smaug’s heart, the Arrow hit its mark and brought down the mighty beast.
