MARKUS "TOLLY" TOLLMANN-YSENBURG from Cursework
The rush of the rivers, the rough laughter from the pubs, the sliding ring of blades, and the winged fluttering of pages had in only a few short years become so vital to his happiness, he could not imagine a life without them. But what Markus loved best about Weyr was what it lacked. For nowhere in the city could a machine larger than a printing press be heard.
I feel like I did a month's worth of story development in a couple of hours. Markus now has a major (history—in another life, his favorite movies are the first and third Indiana Joneses), his fraternity has a name and a "rival," the story has a few new plot beats (including a Very Serious™️ duel for honor), and I learned waaaayy more details about the irl Corps/Burschenschaft scene (a thing I was only vaguely aware of two years ago) than I could ever actually use in a story that is still technically about sentient curses.
Cursework: A Good Soldier
Let it not be misunderstood; Thea loved her sisters. This was nonnegotiable. A fact as immutable as the turn of the earth. But she was under no such cosmic obligation to like any of them.
Another immutable fact: Amalia, Lillien, and Annamarina were the most unserious women Thea had ever known. Amalia—with her dripping, indulgent grief over a man she had known for a month and been wed to for a fortnight. Lillien—who clung to her cocquette-hood with a denial so hardy it persisted even with a screaming toddler pulling her skirt. Annamarina—if she was lucky she would end up like Lillien and be spared prison for common thuggery. Better yet if she did go to prison. She would be safer behind bars, and the rest of the world would be safer from her.
If there was a sort of justice woven into the universe, as the eastern philosophies said, it worked in very strange ways. For Thea, alone of all the sisters, had been born with even an ounce of sense. In fact, it was possible she had been born with the amount intended for all four.
So with Amalia intent on being buried in her widow’s weeds, Lillien married in haste to the gentile poor father of her child, and Annamarina conducting a passionate affair with politics, it was only a matter of time before Thea was ordered to do her duty to the family and make a good match. Never mind if the groom was an ogre. She was prepared to be the only good soldier the family ever produced. But when the day came, she was only surprised that her fiancé was so . . . acceptable.
Markus Tollmann-Ysenburg—Tolly, apparently, to everyone except the most gray-bearded professors and his fianceé—was in Thea’s estimation the very model of a fraternity boy. He was a squarely built young man of twenty-four, handsome in a blunt sort of way, with bright blue eyes which drew attention to the double dueling scars just beside the left one. According to rumor, he had never been the most diligent student, nor the most deserving of the costly education he had received, but there were very few in the upper circles who could muster up any real contempt for him. Most days, the worst Thea could say about him, try as she might, was that he smiled rather ridiculously.
More importantly, the family was flush. The kind which neither revolution nor recession could strip away. And these days, that was not just everything. It was the only thing.
I adore Markus alot! Is there going to be anymore content on him in the future? I'm a sucker for...tentacles
There will be in the future when I continue writing again. I'm happy to take requests or commissions with my OCs.
@after-therevolution asked:
Conrad purred again, leaning into his hand so his cheek squished against his palm.
“An absolute buffoon in love… I’m… I’m happy you didn’t give up on me…” He spoke gently before nervously glancing up at Markus.
“I can’t imagine being without you know… So perhaps I’m what Gavin calls a ‘simp’.” He joked though was still clearly nervous.
“I’ll never give up on you, Conrad.” Markus spoke softly, stroking his thumb across the other RK’s cheek. “All of us were different before we deviated. I’m not going to hold you accountable for what CyberLife tried to force you to be.”
At Conrad’s joke, Markus gave a breathy chuckle and kissed the tip of his nose. “I like the term ‘in love’ more. Because I’m in love with you too.”
