a return to form! well... kind of. it's more jemane nonsense but not of the sunstride variety. Or is it sunstride-adjacent? I dunno. XD
The sudden motion of flame snapping from Jesan's fingers to the tinder startled Guilbert. He restrained from jumping to his feet but felt his legs still tense up as though they had wanted to begin running another direction regardless.
Jesan said nothing save that his eyes gazed apologetically.
"To tell you the truth," Guilbert said with an exhale. "I am nervous. There's nothing in the world that could prepare me to meet the familiar stranger that is my brother."
The two chuckled lightly as though not to disturb the renewed flames crackling in front of them.
"I know the feeling. I don't know what I'm going to say to my sister once I see her again." Jesan began messing with his hair, running both hands through to push the strands back out of his face. "She left a few years ago and I haven't seen her since."
Guilbert frowned. "Where are the two of you from?"
"We're from Skingrad." Jesan simply said.
Guilbert slightly cocked his head to the side. "What were you doing all the way over in Cheydinhal then?"
This time, Jesan sighed before speaking. "I have to get my recommendations. Even though I already miss the fields and strolling through the streets smelling Salmo's next batch of bread. I was going to go to Anvil after Chorrol but meeting your brother at the tavern… I knew I had to help out."
"Thank you." It was said with much warmth, for Guilbert could see the earnest pain in Jesan's eyes. "I hope you find your sister, Jesan. If I was not about to have my hands full with my own brother, I'd gladly offer to accompany you to search."
Jesan chuckled. "The pleasure is mine, Guilbert… though I think I'll be fine. I know she's out there somewhere. My sister is a tough sort— honestly, I'd accept your help if I wasn't unsure she'd want to tie you up like some sort of livestock."
Guilbert blinked. Tie him up?
Jesan laughed again. "She's—! Miraina's a bit of a ruffian, but the kind you can't help except to love. She's knocked out some of my teeth, but she's knocked out plenty more teeth from those who tried to hurt me when we were children."
"…Why would she want to tie me up?" Guilbert scratched the side of his head. "If I'm helping you…" He did not particularly understand— or enjoy— the way Jesan simply shrugged at him.
i know i haven't been very active lately bc of the semester starting and life stuff in general, but thank you so much for always tagging me in your wips 🫶 anyways i wanted to ask: how has miraina's character changed from when you first thought of her to the present?
Oh do I feel that! I've started another semester of college myself, I'm manifesting that we both succeed with ease. And of course I am happy to include a friend! I don't tag every person I want to with perfect success but I tag people in my heart anyway XD
Ahh though, Miraina's character... I feel like she hasn't changed much? She's always had the same buff physique and short copper hair. I didn't ship her with Guilbert Jemane until recently, if you believe that hehe. Her gruffness also used to be a lot more genuine rather than a façade of nerves and she wasn't the Hero of Kvatch-- Jesan, her little brother, was originally my HoK. I made him in the game before Miraina but I don't remember what made me change my mind nor to create her as a character, sadly.
Miraina and Jesan being the children of farmers from Skingrad and having NAMED parents at all is a pretty new development as well and I think her backstory plus birthsign together is what turned Miraina from pure badass to the badass but with insecurities she is now XD
tagging: please feel free to say i tagged you, i've been in a bit of a fugue since my birthday last week
"inky you haven't finished match fit" this is the fic after that it's fiiiiiiiiinnneeeeeeee :D
Guilbert heard the man speaking before he caught sight of him. "You must be the mysterious second Reynald Jemane!"
Guilbert blinked. "What?"
A man in mage's robes sat across from him, smiling wide enough to show a lone gap where one of his molars should have been. "I was sent here to Cheydinhal, with travel expenses paid for via fifty septims, by a Reynald Jemane. He seems to think you are out to get him in some manner of trouble." He flagged down Dervera and ordered a mead. "But I know better."
Guilbert felt his chest tightening. Reynald was alive?
"You're not Reynald because he's Reynald. So who are you?"
"I—" Guilbert stammered. "He... he's alive? I was told that my mother and brother never survived…!"
Honestly I just wanted to write something indulgent hehe
"We don't belong here."
Reynald's voice barely rose above the cadence of conversation in the palace. The hand holding his cup of wine was lightly shaking and Guilbert couldn't tell if that was nerves or anticipation. "We're the sons of a thief."
"You're right about that." Guilbert nodded, feeling how dry his throat was with the gesture. He took a sip of his own wine. "You can leave if you want, brother, but I made a promise to stay with Miraina-- she doesn't have the luxury of being able to slip away tonight."
They both looked toward Miraina, who was awkwardly trying to make conversation with a man that Guilbert was fairly sure was Chancellor Ocato as well as her little brother-- they were both laughing. He hoped the mirth wasn't at her expense; Miraina was only giving a skewed half-smile and didn't appear to be laughing much.
Guilbert was handing Reynald his glass before he thought of it. "I've got to rescue her." He said, still looking at Miraina as Reynald blinked incredulously.
It took Guilbert a few seconds to cross the room but when he made his way he put a hand on Jesan's shoulder, grinning. "Excuse me gentlemen... I was wondering if I might have a dance with the Champion?" Jesan's eyes seemed to glint in response and Ocato looked surprised-- but none of them anticipated Miraina quickly grabbing Guilbert by the hand and yanking him to where others were dancing before there was a proper response.
"Woah!" He was glad he had given Reynald his glass.
"Thank you--" Miraina breathed, scrambling to get into a dancing position-- any position-- with Guilbert. "I'm bein' put on display, Guilbert, they- they don't mean it but I'm the big fish they caught and are parading 'round."
"Miraina... it's going to be okay." He put his hand on her waist, feeling only cold metal. "Deep breath... you look lovely in armor. You'll be fine. It's only going to be one night out of the rest of your life-- I promise."
Slowly Miraina smiled as he spoke, the most genuine expression she'd had all of tonight.
I don't really know what to ask. What do you want to talk about?
Thank you; the day got easier as it went on but it was still overall very rough. x.x
And that's okay! I appreciate you checking in with an ask. you still gave me something I asked for didn't you? Hm though, I could talk about Sheo!Jesan and at least one of the references Sheogorath makes in Skyrim to Oblivion--
I know the whole sentence is a wink and a nudge to everything your player character did/could do in the previous title but I like to think that it was also an attempt from whatever vestige of the mortal Jesan remains within to recall his former existence. He remembers Martin because Martin was important to his sister. Maybe he remembers the Grey Fox ("...blood, a Fox...") because of Fariel? I haven't quite figured out if or how Fariel knows the siblings each... And the rest, well. Sheogorath IS a daedric prince, it wouldn't have to all be personal knowledge of Jesan's.
Though imagining this makes me a little sad, heh. Jesan-- if there's anything left of him by Skyrim-- is trying to remember a sister who is no longer of the mortal coil by holding onto events that have long since passed.
while thinking of indulgent scenarios to write, I admit I giggled imagining Miraina upset and pouty that she's not only sort of lost her touch with being a criminal type post-Oblivion but that Fariel, aka someone who is still a criminal, would obviously prefer her little brother to her
like
Miraina: Why doesn't Fariel talk to me? I'm one of her people!
Reynald: (smiling somewhat dryly) Are you though?
Miraina: I'm more alike to her than my quill-pushing mageling brother!
Reynald, watching Fariel and Jesan menace his twin: ....I'm not so sure about that.
