Work-in-Progress Wednesday

[breaks into your dash like the Kool-aid man] OH YEAH! It's Wipsday, folks, and so here I am again crashing into your personal space with my favorite dolls. [jazz hands] (Listen, I have to make these intros fun for myself.) Ahem, have some more of my mad ramblings.

Gently hugging: @babydinosaur930 @inkoherentwriting @theoneandonlysemla @blossom-adventures @starfleetteddybear and anyone else who might have some things. I have been feeling really self-conscious about tagging people as of late.

“Are you my mother now?” Dusty pink begins to rise in her cheeks, a trail of heat following the path the pad of his thumb takes. “Cleaning up after me and watching my back?”

“Only if your mother would drag you into a secret underground rebellion.” He smirks as he rises from his chair, hands brushing the remnants of breakfast off the front of his jacket. “I could perhaps get things done a little faster if you helped.” 

“I could perhaps be persuaded to do so for a price.” She returns his smile easily.

“And what exactly would that be?” Anders motions her into the clinic, bodies already lining the walls just outside the door. 

“Perhaps you could show me a thing or two about that magic of yours. I am pretty curious.”

“You mean spirit healing?”

“My father had mentioned it’s pretty rare as a skill.”

“There aren’t many of us, that much is true.” Anders leads an older man with greying hair to one of the cots in his makeshift examination room. “It was just myself an Wynne back at the Circle, and we had our own theories on specializations and where they come from.” He sets to work, hands pressing carefully across the body as he listens, a crackle emanating from deep in the man’s chest. “I don’t believe I have seen yours. Do you have one, Violet?”

It had been something which plagued her in the last year before her father passed—a specialty, one which has seemingly yet to manifest in her talents. Bethany had taken after their father with the gift of force magic, being able to push away objects as she pleased and smashing them to the ground at will. Violet, however—well, no matter how many books on magical theory she had studied or how many times she had practiced in the dead of night, she had never been able to move even the smallest of pebbles.

A long stretch of silence fills the room as Anders continues to press his hands into man in front of him before finally finding the source of his troubles—several cracked ribs shift as his patient winces. More than once he had seen it happen, a secondary magic which never manifests and more than one mage made tranquil for it. His brows furrow. Usually, those mages never showed any ability for more advanced magics, but he has seen for himself her use of elemental spells at secondary levels—even her weaving them in creative ways the enchanters of the Circle never could have imagined with their boxed ways of thinking. 

“Watch what I do and follow me.” A soft blue glow envelops Anders’ hands, and he pushes carefully into the man’s chest as he begins to draw from the Fade.

Despite its reputation of being the favored stomping ground for ruffians of all sorts, the Newlands Lodge was no less of an established inn than its nearby competitor. Guilbert had the creeping suspicion that other locals attributed it this unfavorable reputation due to the publican's refusal to conform to certain standards. Dervera Romalen was proud of her Lodge to be certain. And although she boasted about the allowances of fighting and cursing within the Lodge as well as of her usual clientele, it was pride in her business that ensured she kept a tight ship running regardless. Guilbert could faintly recall when he was much younger— and his father hadn't bought their house yet because they had only just arrived in Cheydinhal— watching Dervera handle several orders at a time without missing a single step once. Even though she was practically barking people's names when their order at the bar was ready, the food and drink was no less delicious for it. His father, apprehensive to everything as he was, had sat across from Guilbert at their table chewing on his own order of venison roast with a contentment Guilbert had not and would not see again for a long time. It was this memory that encouraged Guilbert to return to the Lodge over staying instead at the larger Cheydinhal Bridge Inn. Though he figured neither he nor Dervera truly remembered one another he was more than willing to take a chance on her service remaining impeccable years later.

Not sure why it's a new trend among fic readers to assume if the fic has not been posted within the week it's inappropriate to comment on it, like the fic has to be hot out of the oven to give feedback for.

I got a comment on a fic that is less than a year old and it was mostly an apology for being a comment on an "old fic" and how late they were in commenting.

Just comment on the fic. Doesn't matter how old it is.

If the Dark Brotherhood had a HR department how would Nim word her email to them about Lucien's first offence of professional misconduct? Or more emails, considering a disciplinary and an online course about workplace etiquette probably wouldn't fix his behaviour.

Omg XD I’ve been sitting on this ask for over a week, because my new job has taken all of my energy, but I had so much fun the last few days when I finally got to chew on it a bit:)) Thank you so much for asking!! I got a bit carried away, ehehe

Now, given the way Nim handles Lucien creeping on her I mean, seducing her in The Illusionist, I think it’s safe to say she would rather go “op 🤷‍♀️” and stick her head in the sand than ever acknowledge there is a problem lol. More likely, someone else in the sanctuary would have informed HR way before she ever considered it. Probably Lorise. It would go like this:

Vicente, Please, please, PLEASE do something about our esteemed Speaker’s ongoing misunderstanding of professional boundaries. His behaviour toward Nimileth is becoming so brazen, I suspect even Schemer is aware, and if I hear that man say “good girl” one more time, I will take out a contract on myself just for the peace and quiet. Attached below are merely those incidents I personally observed this week: - During the all-hands meeting, Lucien stared at Nim for ten uninterrupted minutes while making innuendo regarding “where a subtle blade sinks the deepest.” - He has developed a habit of materializing beside her and touching her shoulder before she notices him. This caused her to crash directly into the Dark Guardian yesterday, which I feel qualifies as a workplace hazard and cannot possibly comply with the sanctuary’s safety regulations. - In the training quarters, I overheard Lucien asking Nim whether, in a “hypothetical captive scenario,” she would prefer “a slow surrender or immediate submission,” though I failed to see how either option constituted standard tactical procedure. - He keeps using that horrible ghost-story voice whenever he says her name, and last night over dinner, he discussed “penetration strategies” while polishing the Blade of Woe and maintaining direct eye contact with her across the table. Witnesses were unfortunately present, and it has been negatively affecting team cohesion. - Just this morning, Nim showed me several emails and texts Lucien has been sending her (all after 2:00 AM, mind you). They consisted primarily of song lyrics fluctuating wildly between graphic, grotesque, and alarmingly sentimental. She described them to me as "cringe lol," but I suspect this was a front for deeper discomfort. I would appreciate clarification as to whether any of this falls within approved mentorship guidelines, because in my humble opinion Lucien has found a way to turn every contract briefing into his own personal interpretation of foreplay. Personally, I would not continue working under these circumstances. I know we are assassins, but there must still be some standard for professional decorum. I appreciate that Lucien is our superior and therefore technically entitled to behave as though his own arse is the very Void Sithis crawled out of, but I am running out of euphemisms for whatever this is, and we are one more incident away from a stabbing. Though, in fairness, Speaker Lachance has always possessed a theatrical approach to communication, and I would gently remind you that the sanctuary has historically operated with somewhat flexible interpretations of professionalism. Assassination is, after all, not a field known for rigid interpersonal boundaries. I assure you Lucien means no harm. On sanctuary grounds at least.  Even so, I admit the excessive innuendo is regrettable.  I shall speak to Lucien if it will ease your mind, though I suspect he will simply interpret the formal complaint as encouragement. If junior murderers of the sanctuary choose to misinterpret ordinary professional admiration as unsanctioned flirtation, then perhaps the issue lies not with my conduct, but with the regrettably undisciplined imaginations of our witnesses. As for the matter of “prolonged staring,” I was merely observing potential, which, as you well know, is among the most important responsibilities of my role as Speaker.
