CHAPTER ONE: “Whose there?”
.
.
.
You clasped both of your hands together. “Thanks for the food.”
You weren’t really sure why you still did this, even after all these years, but you vaguely remembered your parents doing it when you were a kid. They said that it was a way to show gratitude to something called ‘God’.
‘I hope I’m doing this praying thing right…’ This is one of the few things that you can still remember from your family…
You shook your head. ‘Eat first, think later..!’ You bought the fried meat into your mouth and stuffed your face in, scattering crumbs onto the floor as you ate as fast as you could.
I’m pretty short on eggs….and some herbs, gotta scavenge for those later…I should probably double-check on the traps and check the surveillance camera and-
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
You nearly dropped your food at the sudden sound. Raising your head in alarm, you watched as the surveillance room’s alarm went on and on and on-
You pushed the food aside and scattered to the surveillance room, you slammed the door open, and your eyes widened at what your cameras had detected. “God damn it”.
Two clothed figures enter the forest, both are wearing a bright golden emblem on their cloaks. You squint your eyes in the hopes of seeing the sigil properly, to no avail.
With a loud scoff, you grabbed your rifle and goggles as you exited your home. “These things just can’t mind their own business, can they?”
𐂂 𐂂 𐂂
The forest rustled as the two figures entered; the animals quickly scattered, trying to get as far as they could from the aggravated monsters.
Rowan, the vampire prince, is donned in a dark, finely tailored tunic and fitted trousers along with a short cloak fastened with a golden necklace that sits upon his chest.
Despite his graceful aura, it’s clear how aggravated he is with how fast he is walking, trying to ignore his companion's presence.
Rowan gave his guard a dirty look, feeling something ugly in his chest at how many times Leon interfered with his expedition, and they hadn't even spent an hour in here!!
He knew his parents enjoyed meddling with his affairs- Rowan isn’t complaining about that, but did they really have to send one of the most infuriating and boring servants out there?!
Leon, bless his nonexistent heart, easily matched pace with the young lord with ease, clearly accustomed to his tantrums.
Leon is one of his mother’s favourites, though why on earth she would favour this absolute bore of a vampire is something Rowan would never understand. And unlike his lord's glimmering outfit, his is much more practical and, for lack of a better word, common.
Rowan's ears twitched, feeling the cold air fill his lungs. No matter, his presence is not going to ruin the few hours he has away from that damn city-
Rowan’s thoughts are interrupted as Leon suddenly snatches the hood of his cloak, pulling him back without a word.
The young prince blinked before Leon’s hand was suddenly cut off by an invisible force; the guard merely caught the severed limb and reattached it.
“You have some nerve touching royalty so casually, Leon,” Rowan smiled. He flexed his claws, casually shrugging off the small amount of remnants of dust in his nails.
Leon merely hummed uncaringly “You were moving quite fast, I would have been left behind if you kept at it”
‘That’s the entire point,’ Rowan thought, but he knows that Leon wouldn’t care; he only obeys his mother’s orders after all.
Rowan sighed, “Hah…what a bother, well, just warning you-“ before snatching Leon’s collar, pulling him down to his level “-touch me like that again and your hand won’t be the only thing you’re losing, rat.”
Leon’s eyes narrowed, his hand twitched at the prince's threat before going lax, “Yes, sir.”
Rowan huffed before proceeding to walk ahead. The reported accident should be around here….
Now normally, no member of the royal family would even glance at such an incident, after all, if some nobody got themself killed, isn’t it their fault for being so weak?
However, the method in which they died wasn’t some brutal fight amongst peasants, nor was it the clean shot of an assassination. No, this method was clearly a hunt. One that Rowan is very interested in solving.
The pictures and investigation showed that the vampire was simply wandering in the forbidden forest before being trapped by some contraption and before being killed.
The trap clearly existed at least, shown by the faded print on the ground, demonstrating that something was planted there before being taken away by someone.
“It’s a damn pity that the trap wasn’t taken into our custody, but no matter, it’s about time this section of our territory is properly inspected anyway.”
Rowan waited to hear Leon’s typical hum, only to hear nothing. "Hm?" He turned around and saw that Leon had stopped several feet away.
The white haired vampire has been staring at a certain section of the forest, unblinking and tense. Rowan raised a brow as he moved his head to stare at the same spot.
Only to feel disappointed as he hears the typical trail of insects crawling and the rustling of the animals around the forest.
“Leon,” The guard blinked at the sudden use of his name. “What on mother’s name are you staring at?” Rowan inquired. He slowly blinked and shook his head. “Nothing…I...must have misheard.”
Rowan rolled his eyes and continued walking. "Hmph, whatever, we do not have time to dangle around for 'nothing', Leon. Now come on!" Leon continued to stare suspiciously at the forest before trailing after his master.
“I must have been mistaken….” He whispered to himself.
There’s only one being who could make such a beautiful heartbeat, and their kind is long dead.
𐂂 𐂂 𐂂
There are two of them.
Something about that fact made you want to slam your head on the trees so that you can pass out, anything to make sure you don’t have to deal with this because TWO of them????
Dealing with one vampire is fine. So easy that you could do it with your eyes closed. But two clearly high-ranking vampires? No. Fuck that shit-
You took a deep breath, trying to slow down your breathing; it won’t do you any good if they hear your heartbeat. It’s fine, this is fine. It’s not a big deal. Just get rid of them and go home…
You glanced at your gun, 11 shots.
You grimaced, cursing your luck because, of course, of course, these things just had to enter your forest during the day you needed to hunt. Just your luck.
You swiftly reloaded your gun, making sure that it wasn’t jammed before letting your attention slip back at the pair once more, adjusting your goggles so you could see them more clearly in the dark.
You could tell that the white haired one has more experience, with the way he regularly watches his surroundings, how his hand is always clasped around his sword, and with how absolutely silent his footsteps are…
This hunt is going to be a lot more troublesome than I would like it to be….
Funnily enough, he isn’t your main concern. The real problem here…Your eyes slid towards the black haired one, whose walking speed seemed to get faster and faster as he eagerly tried to get to their destination. Is him
There’s something strangely familiar about his presence. One that made your skin prickle and your hair stand on end.
You know deep down. That one’s a fucking threat.
You sighed and checked your watch. It glowed a comforting blue, showing that everything is set.
The moon, ethereal in its element, slowly moved aside, allowing you to watch as the vampires walk deeper and deeper into your forest. And you allowed yourself to smirk.
“Oh well, it doesn’t matter….”
It’s not like either of them are going to leave this forest alive.
𐂂 𐂂 𐂂
Rowan inspected the ground, only to let out a dejected sigh.
“Nothing new here, it’s the same as what the report said…” In a small bit of boredom, he kicked a pebble into a tree, breaking the base, causing it to fall, creating a racket in the woods.
“Here I thought we would be able to bring home some samples of whatever remains of the trap…”
Leon gave him a disapproving stare. “Master Rowan, with all due respect, you knew that there was a 98% chance that there would be nothing to find during this expedition.”
So it’s your own fault for coming in here for no reason, blame yourself for your own boredom, you damn prince. Leon thought internally.
Rowan got up and cracked his neck with a yawn, ignoring his servant's words. “Well, it looks like this expedition was a waste of time indeed.”
Leon jumped down from the trees, carrying their supplies with little difficulty.
“Oh well, I suppose it’s time to go home-“ But before he could take a single step, all of a sudden, Leon appeared by his side in a flash, stopping him in his tracks.
“Leon-?!” Rowan snarled. “What on earth are you-?!” Leon abruptly shushed him. Rowan raised a brow at the mere audacity of his actions before Leon slowly whispered to the prince.
“Young master…can you hear it?” Leon whispered. Rowan blinked at his tone. There was something close to disbelief in Leon’s tone, as despite his tense form, he seemed….eager.
Rowan raised a brow at that. Now that was something you don’t see every year-
Badump
Rowan froze. Wait
Badump
There it was again
Rowan’s ear twitched, eagerly trying to pinpoint the location of that heartbeat.
BadumpBadumpBadumpBadump-
THERE-!!
Rowan pushed Leon aside as he bolted towards the location of that heartbeat.
He tried to follow its sound as he navigated his way through the woods. What sort of animal could have made such a beautiful noise?
A bird? A reptile? Nonono, none of those creatures even remotely sound similar to this one. Could it be some type of mammal- a subspecies of an ape perhaps?
Hypnotized by the unfamiliar heartbeat, Rowan unknowingly lands on an open plane and-
CRACK
-Is violently pulled back by Leon, just as something shoots from the shadows, smashing into the dirt, leaving a small crater where his head once was.
Leon pushed him back, and his eyes dilated as he watched a figure in the shadows swiftly move away.
He was tempted to chase after the attacker, but he knew that leaving Rowan on his own devices was a horrible idea, so he reluctantly went back to the young master's side.
“Are you alright, master Rowan?” Leon asked.
Rowan shook off Leon’s concern and instead flashed towards the crater.
“SHUT IT- This isn’t the time to worry about something as frivolous as my safety, you fool!!” He snarled. He kneeled down and looked at the hole. Upon closer inspection, Rowan noticed a small piece of metal stuck to the ground.
He stretched his hand in an attempt to pull it out, only to let out a hiss as his skin started to abruptly burn. Rowan pulled his hand back and watched as his skin bubbled, struggling to heal from the strange metal.
“AHAHA Well, I’ll be dammed,” Rowan crooned, delighted as he watched his finger heal without a single scar.
“Young master!!” Leon, upon witnessing his master's pain, quickly checked his finger, only to freeze upon seeing the metal on the ground.
His eyes widened in familiarity, and he pounced, quickly using his cloak to grasp the object.
“It appears that our esteemed culprit is still within the vicinity~.”
Leon did not respond, still staring at the bullet before letting it drop, watching it roll before stopping right in the centre…
Rowan tilted his head at his servant's strange reaction. “Leon?”
The guard looked around, feeling his instincts hiss in warning as he slowly backed away.
“…Something’s wrong.” He grabbed the young master's arm and tried to tug him out of the open field.
“Young master, listen to me.” Rowan blinked, tilting his head inquiringly at his servant’s change of tune before coldly wrenching his arm off of Leon’s hands.
Unbothered by his master’s attitude, Leon continued.
“The bullet’s material, the method in which the peasant died- this is not the mere method of some no good assassin or a high ranking hunter- these are-“
Before the guard could speak any further, both the young prince and the guard froze as they heard a loud click.
They both quickly made brief eye contact before bolting out of the way, just as something ripped the ground in two.
