#OCtober 2021 - Week 2: Who Killed The World?

↳ Day 2: Micah

First up we have a quiet little gent named Micah. Micah is a mute young adult with darker skin, long hair, mismatched eyes, and certain strange mannerisms due to being a 'synthetic' human. Made in the Mineral Lab (hence his name being similar to the phyllosilicate mica), he is a 25 year old Generation IV Ex Vivite who finds himself forcibly buddied up with the eccentric artist Julien after losing his job and needing a roommate under penalty of execution.

Micah is an Ex Vivite, the term given to synthetically-created children in the future of WKTW. Known pejoratively as Aberrations due to the fact they are biologically 'weird' compared to a real human, Ex Vivites are created by haphazardly putting sperm and egg donations together in an ex vivo combination (as opposed to in vivo) and then grown inside robotic wombs. Given the lack of naturality in the act, these babies often grow stunted and deformed, particularly earlier generations. While Micah is part of a later generation whose 'models' are overall more developed and 'normal', he still has visible issues including his heterochromia, muteness, weird tics, and general strange demeanor. He like other Ex Vivites were created to combat the sharply declining birth rate as essentially quickly-produced worker drones that can replenish the dwindling workforce, with little care given to their lives outside of work. As a result, Aberrations face little protections from the brutalities they face from others due to their 'weirdness', a parallel for ableism.

Trivia

Micah's name is based on the mineral mica, however the added H on the end references the prophet Micah who foretold great disaster in Jerusalem and rebuked his people for their dishonest, heathen behavior.

Micah is usually depicted with a hoodie hood pulled up, making his hair stick out in a very striking profile.

Micah communicates using ASL, on the rare occasion he wants to address someone directly.

He formerly worked as a line cook before being replaced with a faster, more efficient robot, leaving him to become Julien's assistant or else face execution for being a jobless non-contributor to society.

Much like Dolly the Sheep, who died early due to her cells being older, Aberrations like Micah have curtailed lifespans.

'Aberrant' life forms exist as a real thing in biology, as does the science behind artificial wombs and 'ex vivo' pregnancies. Given that WKTW takes place in the future and science is given such heavy emphasis, it makes sense that development of this concept would be accelerated leading to its eventual success.
