Tw death and brief talk about suicide and torture but its ehhhh always prevalent in these posts
-02. God. If I could spare literally any character, it'd be 02. Poor kid got drafted into a war she thought was immoral in the first place, put into GLSF, properly traumatized by the experiences in GLSF, came pretty damn near close to being killed herself because she dared to think that murdering civilians was wrong and defected, walked around the warzone without much human interaction for a while, then got caught by Briggs, and was killed for defecting. She wasn't called her own name for almost 8 years. They *had* a name at one point but got reduced to 02 when she got drafted to GLSF. No one knew she died. At most, her family was sent a letter stating that she had died in combat when she joined GLSF to isolate her away from her family. She had nothing to come back to. And when she died, she got nothing. Only about two people noticed her absence, and every mention and file of her involvement in the military was burned when Briggs destroyed any and all evidence of GLSF's existence. They had a name and a family and a life.
-Mac Poste thoroughly fucking hated the government and Albany's war on Boston. He hated his country. He was a former local politician, but was put on leave about the time that Haisley died and the war started to get worse for Boston. He did everything he could to rise against the growing support for the war. The death of his wife and increase of alcoholism absolutely shattered him, and years later when his son Kendrick, who had been on his own for months at that point, told him he got drafted and that he was going, he lost it, even offering to get him out of the country to avoid the draft. When Kendrick refused, he felt betrayed. He taught his son better, he did, he truly tried. And when he got the letter that his son had died in combat, he wanted to blame the war for everything that had gone wrong in his life. A decade later, the war ended and some kid who would've been the same age as his son showed up at his door with a pair of boots, a folded Bostonian Army flag, and a picture of a man who he could only recognize by the horns. His son didn't die 10 years ago fighting on the side of terrorists, he died a year ago, lamented as one of the reasons Boston won the war. He realised he was wrong and defected 8 years ago and started fighting for Boston. He missed his father the whole time. Mac was told everything, given pictures of a man who was once his son. The man doned the scars of a war-worn savage, tears in his ears, almost missing half of his face (something Mac *knew* wouldve bothered him especially), missing a finger. But his son still had his mother's hair, the same pronged horns of his grandfather and father, the same confident and beeming stance he'd seen him do as a kid, the comforting white eyes of his wife he'd look back at every night. It was his son. His son had been a Bostonian hero. The kid that showed up at his doorstep had loved his son, recounting everything he told Mac with warmth. Had Kendrick not died, they would've ended up living together, maybe for the rest of their lives. Mac had closure. He was given the long, bound together set of notes that Kendrick had been writing for months before his death, and the kid left. He had hated his son for years, blaming his "death" for 10 years on the fact that he had chosen to stay and fight. He resented his government for feeding lies to its citizens. He hated himself for letting his son end up as some adrenaline junkie that didn't seem to care about the wrongness of the war. He believed it for years, and 10 years later when he was shown what really happened, he couldn't help but feel sad.
Bit of context that kinda glues these two snippets together:
GLSF: Great Lakes Special Forces Group that Kenny (Huron 01) was drafted into, with Ontario 02 being put into later. Extremely rough group. Very top secret. Once you're in the group, you couldn't leave. In order to stop anyone from knowing, the families of the members are told that you died in combat, and youre told that whoever is writing to you is dead. 02 was critical of the war but kept it to herself until they started talking to Kenny about it. Kenny was until that point one of the most efficient special forces members. Kenny started to become unsure about his involvement and after talking to Michigan 01 about it, she snitched to the lead member West (Superior 01) and after West witnessed Kenny hesitate infront of her to kill a woman and children, she had to wrestle the gun away from Kenny because he tried to end his life. He was knocked unconscious and West immediately pointed fingers at 02, calling them a poison and a whole lot of nasty stuff. Eventually they got Kenny awake and his first action upon hearing that the both of them were going to get decommissioned (big fancy word for getting killed/taken out of GLSF) was putting himself infront of 02 to fight the rest of GLSF and to tell 02 to run. 02 did. She eventually went back to see if Kenny was still alive (barely) so they went to the nearest town to stitch him up and they went their separate ways. 02 wandered around New England for a couple years, occasionally running into Kenny who seemed to be doing pretty well for himself, even landing a spot in the Boston military. She remained unaffiliated, helping out whenever until she was caught by Briggs after getting a little too close to her and her forces. She was tortured for what little information she had, only able to give up the bare basics, stuff that Briggs already knew, and when she had nothing left, Briggs ordered GLSF to kill her and walked out of the room. Kenny and the Bostonian who managed the radio systems were the only ones to notice her disappearance and after about a year, she was declared dead after their little hideout was found to be abandoned for months at that point.
02 usually goes out and reports anything they see that's kinda suspicious in Boston and the surrounding counties to the Bostonian Civillian Army. They're very mysterious and known for having like 0 information about them. They're not even apart of the Bostonian Army, but they're treated as a very reliable source.
Francis Rutherford was very loved and repsected part of the Boston Army, but made a deal with Ellie Briggs, the Commander of the Albany forces into the country of Massachusetts (whole can of worms, but basically this is a really irl divergent au 100-ish years in the future in which the US went through major civil war and most states succeeded to make their own countries) and basically betrayed all of Boston and was told to get the hell out or get gunned down. And Rutherford chose to leave. Briggs eventually got to him and got so mad that she severely beat and hung him up on a building's flagpole in the next city over.
02 eventually found him, and in a very jarring call from 02 to Boston, revealed that Rutherford was dead to the very distraught Bostonians.
