(After a long break, the final ref has been finished! I finished it before Art Fight, in fact, it’s just taken a long time to post. Whoops!)

Patchwork (she/her) is one of the main characters in my oc Mane 6, the master post for which can be seen here!

Of all the newly-appointed Elements, Patchwork is probably the one everycreature winces the least at. She knows the weight of what she’s been chosen for, and frankly, she’s a little concerned that the other equines she’s paired with don’t seem to understand the gravity of the situation. She is a professional rescuer, and with the alicorns as her witnesses, she will not fail the ones she’s meant to save… even if she’s got a bit of an uphill battle ahead of her.

Patchwork’s father, a stallion by the name of Fighting Chance, was a prestigious member of the Wonderbolts. One day, a stunt involving a set of thunderclouds landed him in the hospital with scarred wings and broken bones. It was there he met Patchwork’s mother, a hospital cafeteria worker named Chocolate Pudding. The two hit it off, went on dates, and discussed the dangers that their fellow pegasi faced every day. They say that their love story had two amazing outcomes: the formation of their emergency rescue team, and their daughter who was born soon after its founding.

Patchwork is a pegasus pony who was born without wings. That’s the first thing anypony in her hometown of Cloudsdale will tell you. No one’s really certain how it happened, her parents least of all, but there are only feathery tufts of fur where her wings are meant to be. Every other type of pegasi magic is at her disposal: cloud walking, weather manipulation, etc- but she is completely unable to fly. Still, she resides in Cloudsdale and always has. A knitted quilt with faux wings sewn on is a lot less of a hassle than listening to your peers whisper behind your back.

She is in charge of knitting blankets/tarps used in the skyward emergency rescues, saving pegasi who get ill or injured during flight. It is her goal to someday be an emergency rescuer herself, though at the moment, cloud-hopping is all she is able to do, and attempting a rescue through that strategy alone wouldn’t be ideal. She understands, and is happy to provide what she can, but she still wishes she could do more. But alas, even with all the magic in the world, prosthetics can’t form and replace two whole wings… at least, not yet. Still, she intends to help in any way she can until then.

Patchwork is a very stoic pony, with a monotone voice and a professional tone regardless of the circumstances. Her top priorities are safety and order, and although she’s often regarded as a stickler with no sense of humor or fun, she’s a kind soul at heart. Although not openly warm or physically comforting, she deeply cares for the ponies around her, and those who are close to her know it very well. She may not give you a hug when you’re crying, but she will wrap you up in a warm blanket and make sure you have water. She embodies her element through-and-through.

I have a very bad habit of not using refs for art so I forced myself to practice with some pose references and honestly, idk why I’ve never used them before. It’s fun and easy.

Also for the first one I practiced with pallets too, and went a bit experimental with the clothing. Love how it turned out though. Only complaint is I got her marking colours the wrong way around.

Only complaint is that they were human pose refs so I had to give my precious furry characters human shaped legs instead of animal legs .
